It's an interesting point, how much time do you need to 'do' a museum?

I've been through some in very little time, thrown out of others at closing. On the other hand at the museum I volunteer at, and go in every week, I find something 'new' to me every time. Returning to a museum can also be interesting as your reactions might change to the displays and content - hopefully they will have changed too.

Personally, I rarely if ever read any placards, occasionally photographing them if the aircraft or object is really unfamiliar. The generally generic info about the type is of no interest to me; I'd want that specific to this airframe - some museums are better than others at that.

There was a survey which showed that something like 75% of the time people spent in museums was reading the labels rather than looking at the objects. I think it was an art survey; if anyone knows the accurate details I'd be interested.

As a writer and publisher I'll take dozens of photos of any new aircraft or version for future use; others might take one, others still not even want a camera.

Some write down all the serial numbers, but why they do so remains an anthropological mystery.

We recently went to an exhibition where not only was photography forbidden, but sketching also. Lunatic.

Just some thoughts.

I walked the whole museum twice last week in 3.5 hours. I took pictures of everything too.
If you need more time than that you are a airplane geek and need to seek treatment.

If you guys make it to the storage area, please see if you can get a shot of the single-seat Skyraider rumored to have been moved up from D-M in 1999.

If you walked it all twice in 3.5 hours, you missed half of it.

I have been to the NMUSAF more times than I can count over the past 3 decades. I enjoy every visit and am a "Friend" (member of their association).
I truly love warbirds and study WWII era a/c primarily. I have visited well over 70 museums, collections and restoration projects. Been known to drive w-a-y out of my way to see a single warbird...more than a few times.
My problem is I get "museum-ed out" in about 4 hours, no matter what museum I have visited. Not bored, just "time to go".
The "idea" of wandering the NMUSAF for 2 or 3 days in a row is appealing, but, I know I just can not enjoy myself after about 1/2 a day (before I get to the gift shop). Something akin to sensory overload...perhaps.
Anyone else have this "problem"?

I have only been there once. I had very limited time to be there. I only went through the WWII hangar, and quite quickly. I think I was there for maybe 2 hours. I don't feel like I saw nearly everything in just that one (albeit large) room.

I would have liked to read more about the goblets of the Doolittle Raid. There is a TON to see and do there.

the air force shouldn't take more than 45 minutes, after all the only good plane is the P-61 and none of them will ever fly anyway.

P: Noise coming from under instrument panel. Sounds like a midget pounding on something with a hammer.

S: Took hammer away from midget.

Not looking to get into a controversy ... but I still stand by 3 days.

I base this on the difference between a photo shoot vs a visit to a historical museum. The behind the scenes tour on Friday just about takes care of a half day.

To visit the World War II section, one can easily spend a half day to try and get some sort of a comprehension of the Army Air Corps activities. There's more than just the airplanes ... POW exhibit ... Doolittle Goblets .. and so much more ...

But to be honest, I guess my age is a factor in that I lived thru all the wars starting with December 7, 1941.

NOTE TO MUSTANG DRIVER .... It's pretty firm now that the Modern Flignt Gallery will be painted black .... probably starting in October or November ..

No way, I had heard that, but passed it off as a rumor. With a tripod, the black makes for awesome pics.

I thought I WAS seeking treatment by visiting this site everyday! Well for me it comes down to this, It's sort of like a budget at the end of the year....you know...... what ever you don't spend you loose it and you get less next year....Well... what ever time I don't spend in that museum will be consumed by "shopping" with the wife and daughters. Now.... I ain't the smartest guy on the block but I would rather spend a few days in a museum than the alternative. Who is with me on this one?
