Brazing

Anyone got any experience Brazing? Any hints on how to do it?

HI ITS MUCH LIKE SOLDERING,YOU NEED A FLUX FOR THE ROD SOME TYPES ALREADY HAVE IT ON.YOU HEAT BOTH PIECES OF THE STEEL TO JUST SLIGHTLY RED THEN BRING IN THE ROD LETTING IT MELT AND FLOW TO BOTH PARTS. ITS NEVER A SUBSTITUTE FOR WELDING ITS NOT VERY STRONG AND WILL FAIL WAY BEFORE A WELD DOES,BUT IS O.K. FOR SOME APPLICATIONS.THANKS MIKE

Mike;

Thinking of brazing the inside of a hyd operating cylinder where it is pitted in order to make the operating surface smooth. I've got to do some research to see if the brazing will hold up to the fluid and the pressures. Also got to know if the pitted area will be a good substrate for the brazed mat'l.

THERE ARE ALOT OF HYD SHOPS THAT CAN REPAIR A PITTED CYLINDER.ONE WAY IS A SLEEVE,OR METAL IMPREGNATING OR MFG A NEW BARREL.WELDING OR BRAZING WOULD BE VERY HARD TO DO INSIDE A CYLINDER UNLESS ITS VERY LARGE,ALSO IT WOULD WARP THE BARREL MAKING THE JOB OF GETTING IT ROUND AGAIN ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE.GOOD LUCK MIKE

Really? What kind of shop? Aviation or Auto? Have you had to fix this problem on any of your Helldivers?

I LUCKED OUT AND MOST OF MINE IS NOS BUT A GOOD HYDRALIC SHOP CAN FIX IT.IF YOU CAN LOCATE A SERVICEABLE UNIT GO THAT ROUTE IF ITS ONE OF A KIND THEN HAVE IT REPIARED MIKE

I don't think the cylinder would be distorted if it was heated uniformly about it's cross-sectional area, and then brazed. What do you think?

ITS NOT THE BEST WAY TO DO IT AND IF IT WARPS ITS JUNK,BUT ITS YOUR CALL IS IT A RARE PART?MAYBE WORTH THE COST TO HAVE IT REPAIRED THANKS MIKE

It's not a rare part; just sick of buying NOS from Lance, and have people call me cheap when they ask me to pay 500% of what it's worth.

Hey Chris,

Just wondering why did you buy a Warbird? Did you do any research into buying your aircraft did you tallk to any one in the industry or did you go hey thats neat I want a WWII Airplane and I have some money buring a hole in my pocket if that is the case then I think you pick the wrong hobby, either be willing to pay for the parts and for the record Lance isn't that bad for prices or get out of the Hobby. Because if you think the rebuild is expensive wait till you have to insure it and then their is Fuel Cost and maintance.

Naw, for the record, I've mentioned Lance and another example that I considered as bad. However, California Texans has very fair prices! So if I was really not happy about prices I would've mentioned Cal Texans as bad too. I compare all prices to theirs. Not sure how to answer those others questions, because I know the answers to all of them--all positive. If any were negative we wouldn't be talking about this right now.

And yes tI can speak from pasdt experiance I and my Dad rebuild a Tiger Moth and you know what it cost nearly half of what I bought it for and mine was just has bad as yours.

I've been in the hobby, so I know. However it's very hard to communicate on the board. Well I can't complain about Cal Texans, and I've heard everybody with a T-6 complain about Lance..
