Warbird Information Exchange

What began as a short article, has evolved into what is now a 58 page long article, on a "snapshot" of what the Guatemalan Military Aviation Corps was like, in 1939. WACO VPF-7s, Ryan ST-Ms, Potez XXV-A2, Caudron Aiglons... 4 years so far, doing work on this article, on and off...

Every time I believe that I am ready to publish it, a new detail comes up and I have to review and modify some data that now is seen under a different light...

I am also researching an article on the Fuerza Aerea Uruguaya's F-51D Mustangs ferry flight from the USA to Montevideo, Uruguay.

Hi Guys,

I had an article published on Uncle Dean, his planes, the recovery, and his wartime service, and I have been fleshing it out into a book for some time now. I would really like to make it a book for young people, but I need a good illustrator first. Who knows, maybe someday!

I have just finished my third magazine article, this time for Warbird Digest (was supposed to be out in issue #3 but got bumped back to issue #4 in May) on a group here in Denver called 'Airpower West', our local warbird contingent here in Colorado....my previous articles appeared in Classic Wings (Zero Time Restoration) on the Evergreen Museum's Zero being restored here in Colorado, and in a now defunct British mag called "Air Action' on the F4U Corsair which I co-authored with Mike Schneider (he of the Corsair Experience DVD).....am working on article #4 for Classic Wings on a guy here in Denver named Carl Williams who owns and flies an Alexander Eaglerock biplane and donated another to Denver International Airport back when it opened....and I have some other ideas roaming around in the back of my head....

I have wrote a few magazine articles over a course of a number of years. I wrote a couple of articles for Warbirds magzine on a couple of privately owned P-51's of people that I knew. One being Moon Spiller's P-51A which is out in Hollister CA. owned by Jerry Gabe now. I also wrote an article for Warbirds International on Brad Sherk's P-51 project which Brad I believe has sold. Latest article I did appeared in Warbirds Digest#3 which I have not gotten my copy yet must be on a 2 legged mule HA HA on a friend of mines PT-19. Also have 2 other storys submitted to Warbirds Digest one on Mike Kellner's B-17E restoration and an article on a N3N in Toledo, OH. I also have some other articles hopefully planned. Lastly to Dick Phillips I too want to buy your book Dick and I intend to be at the Mustang gathering at Reno.

That's precisely the reason I started writing -- I wanted to know more information and I couldn't find it. So I eventually just decided to research it out for myself. Hopefully I'll be able to provide a one-stop source for people asking the same questions I was.

If you (or anyone on the WIX) have specific questions, I'd be more than happy to answer them, and if there are specific topics about Cavaliers or the Piper Enforcer that you'd like to see discussed, please let me know. I'm about 6 months away from submitting the text to publish, so there's time to add if I haven't all ready tacked the subject.

Regarding Dick Phillips' book...

If the research information that he's been providing me for my book is any indication of what he's going to have in his book, we're all in for a REALLY BIG treat when he gets it published. I'm definitely buying one.

After many delays, I'm just finishing up the 10th edition of my warbird directory Gallant Warriors: Propeller-driven Warbird Fighter and Bomber Survivors Around the World. As my wife will tell you , I have spent countless hours, weekends, nights, etc double checking my database against many different books, magazines, lists and sources to verify, correct, delete "ghost" airframes and add ones I'd missed. Dave McDonald's excellent series of articles in Classic Wings on Bf-109s and Buchons were a great help. This forum and FlyPast have been an invaluable resource for news. This should be the best edition yet. Thanks guys! I have been building the database since 1983 and didn't dream of publishing it until Jeff Ethell called me in 1988 and said "Do it!". He kept calling with advice until I got the job done. Thanks Jeff. I still miss your support and encouragement.

PS - P-51 Mustangs have almost driven me nuts over the years with all of the adopted id's, switched id's and dataplate "restorations". I still don't have them completely right. I can't wait for Dick's book to come out and I'll have have a tent pitched at the front of the line to buy a copy.
