I was curious at to the instruments in my collection. 3 to be exact.

They are in a display of 3 fuel guages from a Corsair, Hellcat and Wildcat

The Corsair Liquidometer brand Model #EA-100-2 2.5 mR/hour

The Hellcat GE Type DJ-20 model 8dj20aae 1.5 mR/hour

The Wildcat Liquidometer EA 100-15 1mR/hour

None of these too high, and that was with the probe on the glass. From where I sit in the office, the reading is the same as outside. All guages are intact.

I tested my granite countertop, and it was barely above background.

Have fun!

I wish I had one.
Now test some food, and any metal items from China. I'd be curious what you find. Some years ago there was talk of purposly polluting the metal supply with scrap from the nuclear industry. I would bet China does it all the time, especially with anything that will be exported to here.

I'm curious what type you are using. Is it one of the Civil Defense units? I've got two meters but I think they both need to go out for overhaul, if there is any such place that will do it. I've always wanted to see what the cockpit reading would be in our 1972 AN-2 vs the 1991 AN-2. I've heard that you can get significant readings from the center cockpit glass in a MiG-17 and a MiG-17. Not sure about the MiG-21. I had to walk away from an airplane deal in Russia back in 1992 due to excessive readings. For the most part, I do not worry very much about the Radium dial face issue but no doubt, ionizing radiation kinda sucks. I've heard that Madame Currie's lab notebooks are now kept in lead boxes as they are not safe to handle without significant protection. I assume Radium exposure is what killed her so clearly, it can be dangerous stuff.

Naaaa its that nasty crude, and coal thats bad. Just listen to the propaganda.
The greeny bunch loves the nuke crap, because it is sooooo polution free.
Its just that with radiation no one can see, smell, hear, feel, touch, taste, well you get the drift. Well think of it this way back in the days of TEL we didn't have all the cancer and diease that there is now. And they would not want you to believe it is from that nice Nuke stuff, that is so clean.
How stupid do they think we are?

Back in the 70's I went to work for Westinghouse building the steam equipment for nuclear power plants. Yup, I thought that would be a nice longlasting career. Thanks Hanoi Jane.

We check all our gauges before sending them to overhaul for the L-5 and some of them were off the charts! If you ever neede to check one, go to your local fire dept. they should have a counter...

Why? Why would China intentionally contaminate products that are being sold to it's largest trade partner? How would that make any sense? Even in the cases where Chinese-made products have been found to be contaminated, it hasn't been because of some sort of massive conspiracy to hurt others, it's simple incompetence and corruption, just as was found in the US at the turn of the century.

Because they would mix all kinds of scrap together, and could even get scrap delivered that way. And if you have a crucible of metal that has been polluted with radioactive material it needs to be junked that can cost millions to do. And everything about china is to make a buck, so I'm not saying it would be done on purpose. And in another breath, you say why would they do that, well why do they make some much sub standard junk that is exported to this country? You would think they would want to send only top quality stuff here. If you buy a power drill from china that only lasts a month or so they don't care, they got their money. Either you eat it or who ever the store is you got it from eats it. Because it will never be sent back to china, the shipping is to cost prohibitive. And besides, that country is so rich, why not do something like that as a silent war. "Massive conspriacy"
Kinda cool how if there is a conspiracy they sure know how to make sure there is no one that will believe there is one. Just label anyone that hints at such a thing as a NUT CASE. Yeah the things that you can do and make people believe when you own the media, and teach the populace.
Just look at the massive brain washing with the environment and global warming topic. And the massive media poo pooing of the woman running for VP, and how nothing bad is said about the side the media wants in office. The only change that is comming from the one they wish to be in office is more freedoms and your property rights going down the drain.
But naaa they worry about a womans right to choose to kill a human baby. But dare a hunter go kill a deer. And dare you want to cut a tree down on your land with these you are not allowed to have a choice. That is the wonderful thing about an environment based religion it gives total control to the "conspirators" anything to protect the enviroment anything.
Like the latest comments from Gore, a reall goof ball. All you have to do is use the old noodle for something other than a hat rack.

Yes, the evil yellow menace is trying to poison us and the lie-berals are just out to distract us from the real problem. I'm sorry, but do you have the slightest idea how insane that sounds?

engguy, this is way off topic. Leave off and let's get back to warplanes iydm :)

I'm not getting this topic. Am I hearing that radium dials weren't all that bad? Methinks you need your geiger counter checked. UNless your kid scraped the paint of and ate it, it should still give you a nice high reading. My uncle had an old altemeter in his workshop for years and years. It definitely made my gieger counter click and clack like a mariachi band.

Here's a good link that I found while looking for somebody to recertify and or fix my survey meters. It looks like they can also sell me a dosimeter charger. It's interesting stuff but I'm probably going to be sorry if I start checking the airplanes in the collection. I find stacks of loose dial faces in the turret parts hangar but I'm not sure if they have Radium dial faces or not. What's that old saying? "Shoot, Shovel, and Shut Up"

Go point it at a ceramic object with yellow glaze and see what you get.
