This is the place where the majority of the warbird (aircraft that have survived military service) discussions will take place. Specialized forums may be added in the new future

Chris, Could you possibly be anymore insensitive??? Eric is not only a member of the wix board but has many friends here and they were concerned about him and the people on the aircraft. Sure more people are killed in car wrecks that airplane crashes but so what right. What if that someone on the plane was of your family would that change your feelings???

Hey guys, It really is nice to see everyone concerned about my life but also a little freaky to read about. I know if any of you guys were listed in a report such as this I would be just as concerned and want answers asap. I think my wife is a little spooked as well. She, like me, knows it can happen anywhere at any time and don't feel flying or doing airshow work is any more dangerous then driving on our freeways. Thanks again for your concerns.

Chris, I have never met you but I have met Ryan, Scott, Tim, Steve and many other guys from the forum so there is a personal concern for someone they consider a friend, just like I would be concerned if their names were mentioned.

Sorry Guys:

Not meant that way, just thought it was unlikely and was implying that.

Already did that thank you. New Years eve morning got called in to take care of icy roads and didn't make it. Was out of work for a week while I healed up. :(

I'm just glad to know that things didn't hit quite so close to home and am saddened that it happened at all.

Yes, that is sad. I crashed a car once too. Just figured an aviation related incident with AIRIC was unlikely, since he appears to be an outstanding pilot.

Unfortunately bad things happen to good people, no matter how skilled they may be at what they do. I'm not going to try to tell you that this is the first rig I ever wrecked because that would be a bald faced lie. However this is the first time in 18 years of plowing and maintaining roads that I had to call the boss back and tell him I was not going to make it and had crashed on the way in.

It just struck me funny that you said what you did since it was not so long ago that I had done just that.

So only "other than outstanding pilots" are likely to have accidents????

Well BDK:

Mostly, yeah, because I'm not aware of the T-6 to be prone to inflight failure. The main issue would be the fuel selector valve or an overtimed engine. Since AIRIC works commercially with the T-6 he has high flight hours, and good engine. For the selector valve, I'd think he would know the necessary precautions to avoid that. ie keeping enough altitude on landing approaches in case of engine failure.

Wow! This really is a weird day. First I’m in a crash then I’m an experienced T-6 pilot, cool! Sorry to say I don’t have a pilots licence.

Woops AIRIC;

I thought you were! I think I got you confused with another WIX Member. Yeah, it has been a wild day, because I was taken the wrong way I didn't express myself well, either..

But it is true that you cured cancer and are in a rock band... or am I thinking of Buckaroo Banzai?

T-6

The T-6 is no different than any other aircraft. Many things others than a fuel selector valve (I've never heard of that one) can bring one down.
Yes, there have been structural failures. Walt Olrich (sp) wrote a excellent article in Texans-n-Trojans on the subject a few years back. JCW even had a failure (1 single stupid important bolt sheared) that brought his to grief 2 years ago.

Thu Feb 24, 2005 10:35 pm

Hi Jack:

Which bolt failed? For the Tail cone, or the fuselage to the center section. If one of those failed, Ithink the plane would make it back to the airport. So I presume a bolt in the tail cone failed, then when he landed the plane probably broke in half. :(

I guy at the airport told me he saw a T-6 flare two high, stall, and then pancake, destroying the tailcone.

You assume way to much. You need to stop that!
The bolt connecting the scissors on the right main failed during the landing rollout. This allowed the bottom half of the gear including the tire/wheel to rotate which caused the plane to go out of control. JCW got the mags and mixture, pulled the gear and allowed the plane to settle onto the runway with minimal damage. Another example of experience and outstanding airmanship making what could have been major accident into a minor incident. She's all repaired and he flew her today following repairs for an hour.

For the sake of this discussion about structural failures, I don't think so. I could've been anything, and you didn't specify.
