Does anybody know if there is anything to see airplane wise in Tunis, Tunisia?

How about Cairo, Egypt? I know there is a military museum in town and I've seen a couple of migs and such mounted on poles.

Can't find anything for Tunis, but there is the Egyptian Military Museum at the Citadel in Cairo open Tues-Sun. 0900-1400 with about 10 aircraft and the 1973 War Panorama Memorial & Museum at Sh'Al-Nasr 10 km north of the city on the road to the airport. Open Wed-Sun 0730-1700.

Fort the Citadel, there is only one problem, obscure propeller driven aircrafts such as a PZL Wilga and a few stuff I failed to identify (Kind of local built DhC-1,kind of Yak-11?) do not wear neither registrations nor serial.

Last time, I was in Cairo, access to the Memorial was denied but I could shoot photographs of all aircrafts thru the fence.

On the highway from Cairo to Suez, there is also a small memorial with three aircrafts, a Mig-17, a Mig-21 and a Sukhoi, not worth the trip.

On the highway Cairo to Alexandria, there is a Red pole mounted Mig-21 at the entrance of Air Force barracks near Sadam City. If you want to avoid serious trouble, you should stay away.

Same remarks applies to the Red pole mounted Mig-21 in front of the summer residence of President Muharrak. I have been told by local contacts that you might be shot down without warning. Obviously, I refrain to test if it was the truth or Oriental hyperbole.

Not aircraft related, but your posting reminded me that my Grandfather is buried in North Africa in one of the Commonwealth War Graves. He was a Trooper (tank driver) in the Royal Canadian Armoured Corps, KIA 02/03/1944 and was buried in MEDJEZ-EL-BAB War Cemetery in Tunisia. He was an American fighting in the Canadian Army. We're planning on visiting the grave site at some point so it'll be interesting to hear what there is aviation wise to see in the area.

The Mil side of Cairo West might bear looking at. Are you only going into Tunis , or elsewhere?

The mil side is where I always park. Not too much to see there. Tunis is the only town that I'll be staying in, but depending on how easy it is to get around, I might drive somewhere else.

I seem to remember that there was a museum, was it the El Alemain one, where the remains of a spitfire are on outdoor display. The remains consisted of the center section, and wings, perhaps more (but I don't recall). There was a photograph of the aircraft in Flypast a few years back. I'm sure that Peter Arnold would know.

The museum in Cairo at the Citadel is very interesting. I spent a couple of hours wandering around. Of course it says that the Egyptian soldier is the best in the world! They do have a great expose on the '73 war and in particular the air battles..
