Spent all afternoon at the Creve Coeur Airport:

First, two groups of F-15s (8 aircraft total) flew over the field, enroute to practice. Jet Noise: It certainly is the sound of freedom! Impressive!

As for Creve Coeur: two Stearmans were flying, as was a Harvard and several Aeroncas, Cessna 140s, and some other GA types.

Piper L-4 also flew; noticed two T-6s inside hangars as well as several ongoing projects like a GeeBee, a Wright transport plane of unknown nomenclature to me; Fairchild 24, WACOs, and a neat CASA 102 Saeta Jet (it is for sale if anyone is interested).

I did not see the P-51 nor the Fouga.

For Brad Pilgrim: They had the Rawdon outside, and saw it up close; neat airplane! I have some photos for you, but they are 2Mb each, so please let me know if you want me to send them by e-mail or if I should burn them to a CD.

Saludos,

Tulio

Tulio,

Is there still an air museum there? Some years ago I visited one in the Missouri River bottoms near Creve Coeur Lake... I assume that is the airport you're talking about. Some non aviation friends told me a year or so ago that the museum had closed after a fatal accident. However, they could well be wrong as I saw an active website for the museum in the Vintage Aviation section a few days ago. If it is still active, I want to take some pictures when we make the annual St. Louis pilgramage to visit friends and family.

Thanks,

Jeff

PS. If you're sure there is a mustang, I'll be camped out :D

Howdy, Jeff!

First, the correct date should have been March 06... my bad.

The museum at Creve Coeur still stands. You must be talking about the other museum, the one that was located at the Charles Lindbergh Airport in Chesterfield, a few miles SW. This museum was closed due to damage from flooding. I have been there several times, and the only aircraft left are an F-84 and a Harrier Jet, nothing else. I have photos if you want.

The museum at Creve Coeur is devoted to antique aircraft (or Classic if you prefer) and bi-planes. It is worth seeing, if you haven't. Neat WACOs, Staggerwing, Lakes, Stearmans, I mean, all kinds of neat aircraft, including a Curtiss biplane from Argentina : )

But, the neat thing about this airfield is, that people are extremely nice. You walk in front of the hangars during weekends, and they all have their doors open, and you can see all the neat stuff, projects and so on. They are friendly, they invite you in, talk with you, a really nice bunch there.

Well, I camped out at the pic-nic tables all afternoon, hoping that the Holy Grail would show up, but it was not to be this time (I wasn't worthy
: )

But, I will keep going back as long as I am in St. Louis, until I get to see the '51.

Saludos!

Thanks Tulio,

The "Classic Plane" Museum at Creve Coeur is the museum I visited 10-14 years ago. Obviously my St. Louis friends were wrong (they're not aviation oriented). When I was there last, I was a much poorer photographer than I am now, so I want to go back. I remember they had a T-6/SNJ at that time. It's good to know there are other Texans to be seen. Do you know the ID of the Mustang?

I must say, on average the folks in St. Louis are generally good natured and friendly. Much like average Texans, but a less boisterous! I lived near you in Katy (Cinco Ranch) from 6/98 to 6/03 so I have a pretty good feel for folks in both areas.

Proud Native Missourian and Adopted Texan Living in Mid Atlantic Exile,

Jeff

Hi Tulio,
You won't get to see the Mustang, the owner Les Heikkila is out of town. It's in the furthest east row of hangars, 3rd one down on the west side of the row.

The airplane is Petie II, bought from Mark Clark and it's in immaculate condition.

Jeff:

Howdy, Pardner!!! As for Texans being boisterous:

"Oh, Lord it's hard to be humble, when you're perfect in every way.... : ) " "We're doing the best that we can!" : )

Don:

Thank you for providing the I.D. on the '51. I have no idea how much longer I will be in St. Louis, but it will probably be another couple of months or so, and it may be, just may be, that one of these weekends when I am camped outside the hangar (already located, tagged, GPS coordinates stored, etc.) I will get to see the Mustang fly!

Brad:

INCOMING!!! (check your e-mail).

Saludos, y'all.

Oh cool! I won't be out this weekend but will be the next few after that. I'll keep my eyes open for you, maybe we could go fly the Fairchild?

Is this the Museum that used to have a TBM, Phantom I, and Banshee that went to the National Warplane Museum in NY? I remember hearing they got these planes full of soot from a flood. What else did they have at the Museum?

And I'd love to see the Harrier pics.

Thanks,

Jim

Don:

PM your local phone number, or if you want, call me at the Residence Inn Galleria, and leave a message on my voice mail.

I'll contact you, and we can coordinate a mini-Wix bs session. I'm good at making stuff up! : ) We can meet and talk airplanes, but I will do a lot of listening, ok?

Jim:

I will attempt to e-mail you the photos at whatever address you have registered at WIX.

Saludos,

Tulio
