This is the place where the majority of the warbird (aircraft that have survived military service) discussions will take place. Specialized forums may be added in the new future

A friend of mine is thinking of buying a Broussard from France but he's curious as to the costs involved in shipping one over here to the USA. I told him I was sure some of y'all here would have an idea. So, any ideas? Thanks.

Probably will cost more than the price of the airplane. Last one we looked into was cost prohibitive.

That's kinda what we were joking about. Pay $30K for the a/c, then $40K to get it here.

Your friend is probably better off to find a Broussard in the States. They are around.

1- Hire a competent firm to disassemble and pack. It looks like a simple A/C to take apart and is reasonably light weight. Most damage on these things is from the packing end of things. The buyer might send someone to supervise of participate. That can also make reassembly easier. You might even need to have it flown to the UK or somewhere near a port to lower ground transport costs.
2- Floating across on the boat should be the lowest cost involved. It cost more to truck a set of P-51 wings coast to coast then it did for the transport costs to ship a P-51 from UK to Calif a couple years ago.
3- Try to get it to a port near a reassembly location to cut down on ground trucking costs.
4- Competent people to reassemble and register. Along with the assembly you have registration, FAA DAR to get an Airworthiness in the Experimental Exhibition category. There could also be importation paperwork and such as it was a military A/C. This is a process with the right people that could take a few days or it could take months.
It is an adventure but will take some time and some bucks.

Totally unrelated, but I was researching a term paper for school and there were quotes that you can do whole shipping containers for $6-8k from China to the US. One would think it would cost less France to US.

The volume is much higher from China to the US though, so rates may be more competetive and the container ships larger. Also, US back to China is much cheaper as most containers go empty.

Genoa Italy to Houston Texas used to run about 5K$ per container. Transit time was about 45 days from the SIAI factory to our hangar in Denton, Texas.

Fam - shoot me a PM. I work for an international freight forwarder. I can get you some quotes as far as shipping goes from France to the US.
If youre paying 6-8K for a container from China to the US, you are paying way too much!

Steve: That price is also going to depend on wether that is ocean freight cost only or like ours was, factory to hangar. We had several hundred miles of trucking for our containers on top of the ocean mileage.

I'd have to agree about that. Unless the Broussard in France is REALLY cheap, I think the hassle of shipping, importation and re-licensing would be more trouble than it's worth. Buy one that's already had the tedious stuff dealt with...

Shipping warbirds must be a scary idea for owners, so many horror stories about mishandling over the years

You could contract someone to fly it - maybe need an extra tank, but long range single-engine ferries are being done all the time. Even if that's a scary risk (it is for some, no matter for others) it would be worth finding out to give you a comparative cost.

I have shipped two planes from over there to here over the last three years and it was amazingly inexpensive. If you're really considering it pm me and I'll get you pointed in the right direction. jb
