Both images of 56th Fighter Group P-47s.
First photo is P-47D-25-RE 42-26641 LM-S, as flown by the 56th's CO, Col. D C Schilling out of Boxted, England.
Second photo appears to be of the 56th before they left the USA.
A
black & white photo of the same formation I found is captioned "over Long Island Sound in the fall of 1942 ".

The second pic I believe are P-47Bs or Cs. Note the cowl flaps don't go as far down as the D.
