Lake Sentani

Sat Mar 12, 2005 12:46 pm

Hi Folks:

Tony reminded me of this lake with his post earlier.

Anyone heard of Lake Sentani?

A P-40, and a twin engined Japanese fighter/ light bomber are known to be in the lake along with several Japanese planes thought to be there. Max said one of his colleagues even has found a shiny hydraulic t/w strut w/ part of the tail from a Ki-84 in the lake.

Anyway, A Dutch museum called the MLM is trying to recover a P-40 from this lake. A guy by the name of Max Ammer with Papua Diving was passively coordinating with them to get this done.

Anyway, I'm wondering if anyone would be interested in some kind of colloboration to go to the lake and assist the MLM, and at the same time gain info on other aircraft in the lake.

I couldn't reach the MLM by phone, but maybe sombody else may have some ideas on getting in touch with them. Maybe some of the Dutch members of this board would be interested..

I have shots of the undercarriage remains on the bottom, and also a shot looking upward showing the P-40 canopy. Cees mentioned the reason that nothing had happened so far with the Dutch initiative, but can't remember why that was. It has been ongoing since at least 1999 when I got the photos. No doubt everything slowed to a crawl because of the negotiations, I doubt they will welcome 'outside' interferance after such a long and intensive effort..on the P-40 at least.

Dave,

One reason was/is the political climate there. not very healty. And one of the keymembers left the museum to work for the Aviodome (but has since left there as well).

Guys:

Can you Dutch folks possibly do some digging, and possibly get me in touch with a member of the MLM? I'd like to do shared research on Lake Sentani. I'm sure there would be some WIXer's who travel frequently who'd also be interested.

Thanks,

Chris
