MiG-17/Lim-5 in Forney, Texas

Gents,

I saw this a couple of years ago on the way to Big D but was unable to get any shots, asked my Dad to catch it for me this time - thanks Dad.
She is parked off of 20 at Dewidder Antiques. Lim or MiG?

Anyone got the scoop on this weary old bird?

It's an ex Polish Air Force license-built Lim-5.
You can still see the outline of the Polish roundel on the tail. Actually, it's a square, so maybe that should be squaredel.

Dang antique shoppers, clipped the wing. It has been sitting out there quite a while. Drive past it often but only stopped to take pictures once.

Whoever is in the school bus must really be doing some shopping. The photo I took was almost a year ago.

There is an F-111 ( I think, it was almost dark and I just caught a glimpse) along the north side of I-30 near Mount Pleasant.

And you haven't gone back to get some photos for us cozmo?? Man...

That is a strange place for a Mig, I too wonder what the story is behind it?

HA! Funny I post something hoping to find some info when I have exhausted all my ideas (both of them!)and someone points out something painfully obvious! You can see where the old Purina "Squaredels" were before the Red Stars went on.

Anyone have in bio or more on the Lim-5 at Forney, would be great to get a build number or perhaps a story.

About 8-9 years ago on my way to the Champlin Fighter Museum I saw a yard full of MiG-15/17/21s (probably 20-25 machines mostly 17s) just outside of Falcon Field. While I am asking anyone remember this or have any details. Wish I could have stopped but I was not driving and the dude I was with had no time for machines that did not fly.

I have seen that bird too. and think I snapped a photo of it at some point.

On the other hand, I did go meet some really nice folks at a couple of places in Lancaster TX today.

I have seen this bird many times.....hiway 80, east of Dallas....North side of road...

There is an F-111 Ardvark about 20 miles west of Texarkana, at mil. surplus store, on I-30, N side of interstate

I like the Mig...(29?) that is in Seattle, Wa. Visible from the I-5..(at least from an 18 wheeler)...at a used car lot...West side of interstate

Gary, I think that's a MiG-21F-13 you saw. I can't remember where but I've seen pictures of it before; it's at a car dealership called "Jet Car Dealer" or something to that effect.

edit: It's in Czech markings if memory serves, so it could also be an Avia S-103 (license-built MiG-21F) or a Shenyang J-7......MiG-21 variants are confusing :shock:

Many of the variants can be determines by the dorsal spine - large, or minimal. Russian/WarPac vairiants have a large dorsal spine in early models, large in late models. Most of the Chinese versions (they are referred to as "F" models here) have the small spine, with the exception of the F-7E. The Chinese also built one variant with a "double-delta" wing.

The plane was originally sold to an air museum in either Norway or the Netherlands where it was originally placed on display. A number of years later, the lady that owns DeRidder Antiques in Forney, Texas was on vacation there when she spotted the plane. She found out it was available so she purchased it on the spot and had it shipped back to the United States to serve as a roadside attraction at her store. She's turned down some pretty steep offers for the plane and apparently has zero interest in selling it. As a side note, this is the olest surviving Polish Lim-5 in existence. Kind of a sad fate for the old bird IMO.

That lady must be of Dutch descendance, as she has the same (typical Dutch) last name as I have: de Ridder (not DeRidder).
