Aviation Myths

Found this link interesting. ... I know, it's raining here in West Hollywood, what else am I to do?

I thought the myth was that it didn't rain in southern California!

Interesting site, I have seen most of those before and some of their rebuttal of the myths are weak or incomplete. History has a bad habit of creating these monsters, that get perpetuated by the media and they take on a life of their own!

Thanks, that was interesting. Strange page, though, in some ways. Many of the myths he purports to debunk never really existed, and some of the statements he makes in debunking them are themselves bunk.

Thanks for the link! Amusing, mostly for the wrong reasons. Pretty poor journalism, as he's not even bothered to attribute the 'bomber get through' quote - 5 min internet work at most.

The good old Gen. Douhet Principle! Bombers will always get through. Guess the Italian Bombers did when they were only up against tribesmen with spears and arrows, didn't do so well later!

Funny how people here beat up on the journalists, but can't write a thread title. ;) (Not you, Holedigger, not you...)

No, that's the principle, perhaps, but not the quote. Spiked. Come back when you've got it. ;)

My favorite is how the myth that "A lightweight and simple fighter can be as effective as heavier and more complex ones" was exploded by the fact that the G.91 and F-5 couldn't "challenge the F-4, Mirage III or MiG-21 which dominated those years." Let's see, the lightweight F-5 (gross weight 15,000 lbs) couldn't challenge the big, heavyweight MiG-21 (gross weight 17,000 lbs). Quite the David-vs-Goliath confrontation.

What are you talking about and what people are you refering to? ... I'm amused

Instead, the "Beaver" declared he would spike the story about Wallis Simpson and make sure his fellow media moguls sat on it too.

Someone said 'the bomber will always get through'. It should take less than 5 minutes to find it online - ergo, the write of the myths article didn't bother to locate it - poor effort.

Cheers,

It is possible to occupy a space with another person without achieving a pointless fight.

FWIW, no I wasn't thinking of you.

Some advice for you ... I'd let this one go friend, seems it was a typical mis-understanding (again) :x .... We don't want to upset any mod's here with a pointless fight ....

Often, this "poor journalism", is probably an effort to dumb it down and make it easy to read for the average public reader with the 4-5th grade reading level. By doing so, they are less clear and typically muck things up!! It is like me yelling at the History Channel programs that generalize and take short-cuts and by doing so make their narrative "less than accurate"!

An then there is the evening news...don't get me started!! :x

The "Myths" are not all really myths as such, again, sloppy journalism. Many of them were theories, which were proven false as the reality of air combat set in.
