Cozmo, I didn't know the Aggies were starting a medical school. Do you know what the Latin word is for a patient whose Dr. went to the A & M school? "CADAVER"

Gents,

Sorry for stupid question. Displaced Texan out of the loop.
Can you tell me what this post is about and what if anything was lost at the Lonestar Museum?

I say move it out of Galveston to a really safe place like oh say Odessa. No chance of a Hurricane there, not much else going on and I am sure they could get some kind of economic incentive. They could be the big fish in a small sea. Probably get all those visitors that go to that part of the world to come in, and there would be no competition as they would be the only air museum in town.

Due to decreased tax revenue the city is reducing workers pay and contemplating a limited furlough of some employees.

UTMB is not closing. The hospital has furloughed some workers, but not all. This is due to the hospital being closed due to flood remediation and repair. There are units in the hospital that are going full strength. They just opened over a dozen satellite clinics in December to augment medical care while the main hospital continues to undergo repairs.

The Port of Galveston is up and running. The first cruise ship returned 7 weeks after the storm and the cargo ships were back sooner than that.

Texas A&M Galveston relocated all fall classes to College Station for the semester. They returned for midterm commencement on Dec 14. The Spring semester starts in Galveston on schedule.

Moody Gardens reoopened weeks ago. Dickens on the Strand went on as scheduled a couple of weeks ago, as did the big motorcycle ride.

Beach replenishment and remediation is underway.

Lone Star hosted a successful after hours event which, I understand, went off on time. I believe thay are either reopened or within days of doing so.

The City of Galveston isn't out yet, they're on their way back, it's just going to take a little while longer to get to 100%.

All you need to do is use the 'search' at the top of the page. LSFM + Hurricane Ike.

I wouln't say anything was lost but some uniforms, art displays in the Texas Aviation Hall of Fame, ect. ect. were most of the stuff that was destroyed or "lost". Aircraft wise nothing was "lost", but many were heavly damaged, the Spit and F3F are at our shop and we did some work on them but are waiting on money right now and a decision by the museum on those airframes. The left wing outboard or slightly inboard of the outer engine of the B-58 collapsed due to being forced into the wall, the PBY Catalina floated and the right wingtip float was slammed into a beam causing heavy damage. I could go on and on, like the little tigermoth really suffered because it too floated around into other A/C so suffered badly. Go to their webpage for some photos: Hope I explained it enough?

Hey All! I was down in Galveston two weeks ago...... while there was damage still noticeable (and a few sail boats still on dry land)... It was not that bad...... Moody Gardens looked OK, the hangars at the airport all took a beating, but under repair........ My cousin and her husband had NO water in their house.... and the back of their house faces across the water inlet to the airport.... they live over off Stewart Drive. The real damage appeared south of Galveston, across the ferry to Crystal Beach....... I spent a few summers down on the beach with family and friends. The newer beach homes held up reasonably well, but the older homes, stores, hotels, bars, restaurants... you be the judge....... My cousin's hubby works for UTMB. They are not closing..... lots of repair work, yes, consolidating programs to be more efficient, yes..... Ticking off many of the Houston area hospitals because they can't transfer indigent care patients to UTMB. YES!! Alan

Rick, Steve. Al thanks for the updates. I am glad the city and the island are making the comeback. It was too good to give up.

Thanks for the picture of the DE Stewart ! The amazing thing is she floated ! When the Stewart and Cavalla were placed at Seawolf Park they dug two trenches floated them in and backfilled to the waterline ! They were put there in the 60s.

Hot air, smelly gas, and a desperate need to be cool.

But it IS improving :)

How does the beach look nowadays? I used to camp on it 25 years ago :)
