Gaido's was open the week after the storm. They set their tables up in the parking lot, called in the waiters that could get back in and served the relief workers who were essentally the first responders.

There were no shortcuts taken. Waiters had their white jackets on and the tables had their tablecloths.

I don't think they were able to keep it up though, it was probably limited to the food at hand. No electricty on the island for a couple of weeks after the storm.

Bill, that oyster boat in the parking lot is the one normally anchored up in Offat's Bayou.

Muddy, did I miss something ?

Beach erosion was bad in some spots, minimal in others. Don't know about West Beach and have seen NO pictures of San Luis Pass. There may have been some early but we didn't see anything due to power outages.

I guess the thing most folks aren't really talking about is that the last I heard there were still 350 or better that are still missing. The fear is that they are trapped in the debris field from Bolivar that stretches across the prairie in Chambers County. I hear that it is almost halfway to I 10. Probably about 10-15 miles inland for you nonnatives.

Storm surge at Galveston was about 18ft. Because of the last minute sugar in track they say Bolivar got at least 20ft. Most folks don't understand that the surge is measured as if it were calm, the waves from the storm are on top of that number.

Nah, you didn't miss anything important, just some inside jokes :) I didn't realize tehre were still taht many missing. In last cen tury's they put the dead out to sea and they prompltly washe dback on shore, so I'd have to agree taht they are in the debris field.

How is it NO got so many national tears and Galveston and the rest of the Gulf Coast are ten times worse and nobody remembers them?
I think we need to ask Obama to put some of his new infrastucture money back down tehre. Although I also think we need new rules about buidling on the Gulf Coast. If it isn't capable of surviving a ten megaton blast, and survive for three weeks at the bottom of the Pacific ocean, we shoul doytlaw it :?

I drove down to Biloxi a few weeks ago to pick up some equipment from our place in Waveland (rebuilding there) and it STILL looks like the hurricane hit yesterday in places...

I think it has something to do with the different attitudes in Texas about government, responsibility, and welfare... and how you react to something. The folks in NO whined and acted like they were helpless children, and they understandingly got a lot of misguided sympathy in the form of tax dollars and knee-jerk reactions - many of which were wastes of money like the moldy housing and credit cards that often got spent on things that they shouldn't have been. Trust me, Houston and San Antonio got their fair share of the refugees and while we were happy to help those in need, they also brought a lot of their problems with them (some were a few miles from my house and it was a mess).
I think Lone Star is a great example of a group of Texans who took in the damage the damage, gritted their teeth, and have put their backs into the recovery efforts. The recovery in Houston and elsewhere will take years, but it will go on. Folks here have had to be tough in the past, and will likely have to be so in the future.
Oh, and I would also add myself to the list of folks who would visit LSFM again IN GALVESTON. Here's to their recovery! :drinkers: (That's root beer BTW  I don't do the other stuff...)

I still say that Lone Star should move somewhere off of the Gulf Coast for a lot of reasons, not the least of which is the potential for another Hurricane strike. The best idea would be to combine forces with Rod Lewis and make a purpose built airfield and have a combined, but separately owned air museum. I know that Rod wants to start an Air Museum somewhere in Central Texas. Between the two of them, they could court some of the counties in the Hill Country and have a world- class Air Museum close to the tourist spots. It could literally make Central Texas THE warbird Mecca to rival Chino. As with any cooperative venture, however, I don't know if two very large groups like that could get along without one wanting to control the other. It's worth at least talking about, though, IMO. :)

Hey All! I was down in Galveston two weeks ago...... while there was damage still noticeable (and a few sail boats still on dry land)... It was not that bad...... Moody Gardens looked OK, the hangars at the airport all took a beating, but under repair........ My cousin and her husband had NO water in their house.... and the back of their house faces across the water inlet to the airport.... they live over off Stewart Drive. The real damage appeared south of Galveston, across the ferry to Crystal Beach....... I spent a few summers down on the beach with family and friends. The newer beach homes held up reasonably well, but the older homes, stores, hotels, bars, restaurants... you be the judge....... My cousin's hubby works for UTMB. They are not closing..... lots of repair work, yes, consolidating programs to be more efficient, yes..... Ticking off many of the Houston area hospitals because they can't transfer indigent care patients to UTMB. YES!! Alan

Holy crap, that picture of the Stewart is impressive. And it doesn't look like there was much holding the Tautong's sail in place.

Been looking all over for information about a lawsuit against LSFM, still haven't found anything.

There isn't one. That's just B-K trying to cause some turmoil and ill will.

I say move it out of Galveston to a really safe place like oh say Odessa. No chance of a Hurricane there, not much else going on and I am sure they could get some kind of economic incentive. They could be the big fish in a small sea. Probably get all those visitors that go to that part of the world to come in, and there would be no competition as they would be the only air museum in town.

Perhaps they could consider moving to the Airport in Pine Mountain, Harris County, Georgia. http://www.airnav.com/airport/KPIM
5,000 foot runway, undeveloped airport, great for expansion. located near the Little White House where Roosevelt spent a lot of time in Warm Springs, had lunches at Dowell Dells Knob overlooking Pine Mountain Valley, immediately convenient to Callaway Gardens for golfing. Fort Benning is about a 25-30 minute drive, and visitors are always coming to Benning. Atlanta is 1.5 hours north, less time if ya drive even faster.
Nearest Salt water to the south is 186 miles, nearest Salt water to the east is 232 Miles.
Maybe we could get a trucking company to help in the move. I have a peacup and utility trailer (not stolen- have title and bill of sale) :D

I don't know if I'd put BW's motives to that Jack...

As far as we know there is no lawsuit yet from what I'm aware of... and hopefully there won't be one. I think that he took a statement from another thread (Ya gotta be careful sometimes how you word things here) very seriously and possibly blew it out of proportion. Hopefully it was just a mis-interpretation and not based on any off-board information. I personally think the subject should be dropped as it is mere speculation...

Only problem with that is that all of the volunteers and such would have to get visas to leave the country and transfer their citizenship. Methinks there'd be some serious heartache involved.

Not much "Lone Star" in Georgia...

Good to hear that some of the island is coming back.

They have a long road back...it can be done!

Well, I thought I'd toss that up for actually anyone that was thinking about "relocating" to get their stuff to a location out of Harms way.
Roosevelt did spend a lot of time here during WWII, and on Dowell Dells Knob, he had a fire pit built for cookouts (filled in today to keep vandals from destroying it), where he and his "staff" plotted strategies of the war.
I would love to get Roosevelts plane on display here as well as his train car.
