We're at Granny's house for the holly-daze, so I'm way away from my refs like Freeman's Airfields of the Eighth, Then and Now, but IIRC Fowlmere never had one or any C-hangars per the background. I think the one they had was a T-2 or something like that - the shell of which is still on site. Possibly the pic shows them at Bassingbourn or another permanent base that did have them.

The areas of white on national insignia were sometimes toned down a little in the field to reduce conspicuity.

Quite likely I think Wade. Fowlmere was very difficult to distinguish from Duxford when first built but the permenant hangars were demolished in the 20's.

339 FG

In the 80's, I worked with a guy who had been with the 339 FG and was a ordnance guy who hung the bombs and drop tanks on the P-51's at Fowlmere. I really enjoyed his stories and the photo's he would bring in to share with me. He was delighted to find someone who was interested in what he had experienced during the war.

Well the Southwest corner of the British Isles where I come from hasn't had a flake of snow in seven years! How about you? The last time I drove through Oregon it never stopped raining. O wot a larf!

Those appear to be 339th markings on the nose. Don't know the location. They may be weathered in somewhere other than Fowlmere.
