I just happened to be re-reading an old story this afternoon about a Don Whittington leaving the original "Precious Metal" P-51D Mustang(N5483V; 44-73518) in the Gulf of Mexico a mile or so off the Galveston Seawall while running out of fuel trying to find Scholes field in the fog in late January 1990. The Coast Guard rescued him as he floated on seat cushions. I don't know if the Mustang was ever recovered. Does anyone remember what happened to the Mustang.

I don't know anything about this guy so I can't comment on it. But I have gotten a few pm's about it and it is a touchy subject. Just remember to keep it friendly guys. Cause I can already hint where this thread is going.

Why Nathan would get PMs about this thread is a mystery to me.
It's both the truth and a matter of public record. I feel like I was
pretty restrained in my posts
If you have something to say on the subject just say it.
What would you expect him to do anyway???

Read some of this stuff about the Whittingtons. Better yet, google "whittington Brothers".

You can't believe how lucky he was when he put the Mustang in the Gulf. I flew over the area the next day. We could see where the aircraft was because we could see the sheen on the waterr from the oil leaking out. He was about a mile off of the seawall very near to the San Luis Hotel. No more than 50 yards away was a small production platform that stuck about 10-15 ft out of the water. It was built with 5-10 in pipe and surrounded the wellhead. The depth of water was about 20 ft. Had he hit that in fog it would have been over for both he and the plane. The fog that day was an 1/8 to 1/16 and he was tryning to get to Lone Star.

Nothing wrong with going to prison, Gordon Liddy did it, Martha Stewart did it. I've got no problem with them and there wasn't an outcry to get them out, they did their time (Well Gordon got his cut back some)....

If that what it takes to get a warbird, so be it.

I hope you were trying to make a joke with this statement. Selling drugs can not be justified by anything.

Kenylco. Does being a good pilot validate illegal behavior to support a hobby? I don;t think so. But then again I also believe in the death penalty. Lets not make heros out of criminals because we like their toys.

Jack, you're right. The truth is out there and it is public.

Glenn
