The I-401 is a target ship in the Pacific off Pearl Harbor for tests of the Mark 10-3 exploder. At 1059, she sinks by the stern at 21-12N, 158-07W after being hit by two Mark-18 electric torpedoes fired by Cdr O. R. Cole's USS CABEZON (SS-334).

17 March 2005:
Oahu, Hawaii. The Hawaii Undersea Research Laboratory's (HURL) deep-diving submersible Pisces VI locates the I-401 off the coast of Kalaeloa. The I-401 lies in about 820 meters (2665 feet) off the coast of Barbers Point. The bow is broken off just forward of the aircraft hangar. The two pieces are not far apart and are connected by a debris field. The main hull is sitting upright on the bottom and the numbers "I-401" are clearly visible on the sides of the conning tower. Her 25-mm antiaircraft guns are in almost perfect condition.

a possible long shot...... are the planes in the vicinity of the sub wreck?? if not it's a damned shame!! i think the smithsonian air & space museum has the only surviving & restored example of the aichi m6a1 seiran, & it is 1 hell of a beautiful restoration at that!! regards, tom

Tom, in the provided material the I-401 jettisoned 3 Seiran about 3 days
previous to their 29 Aug/45 location off of Honshu, Japan. Probably,
deep water..whatever the "course track" was from Ulithi. However in
reading the material there appear to have been vacillations by the crew
whether to go "here or there"....then they resolved to head back home.

The I-401 herself, was taken to Hawaii as a war-prize, and sunk as a
target for new Weps systems.
