So the "City of Savannah" was NMF, and they are planning on painting it OD??

Good. The nation's capital deserves a combat-historied B-17, displayed soon. It does beat waiting for 20 years to have the Swoose finished and displayed there.

Great pics! Interesting how there are still pink slurry stains on the wing roots. Is this the last B-17 still in tanker configuration?

Here is a picture of the original " City of Savannah" . She flew with the 388th BG and her crew , pictured here, picture her up at Hunter Field in Savannah GA. As you can see from the nose art, she was the 5,00 bomber processed thru Hunter in 1944. The city paid for her through war bond donations and many turned out at the base for her dedication. She was shot down on her 13th mission over Germany and the crew was captured and spent the rest of the war as POWs. I am not sure why they are painting this on OD as it clearly shows, at least when it left Savannah, it was not painted. I doubt by that time in the war that it would have been painted in the field. I'll have to ask Dr. Brown at the museum about that.

It seems like it's going to take longer than "a couple of months" for a full restoration. It appears that the plane is stripped of all military equipment, interior, gun turrets, etc. I hope they don't paint it silver. Better to have it OD green. I assume the Smithsonian will control the restoration since it will be a loaner...

Thanks for the pics. The B-17 looks great! I like the sign on the side of the trailer too.

I saw a few clips of this B-17 last week on "America's Hanger" on TV while it was in storage.

The only problem now is that I have to get down to Georgia to see it. :lol:

44-83814 had no input into the war at all, but she had a glorious career after, mapping large areas of the planet.

Here she is taking part in the International Geophysical Year, on her way across the Pacific, 1958.
Normally she had a 10 ft boom projecting out forwards between the pilots. This was to allow them to hold a heading very accurately during photo runs. Must've been removed for the ferry flight.

From these latest pics, the skins look to be in pretty good shape. Seems like it would polish up just fine.

I was thinking the same thing. It would almost be a shame to paint it. Get it re-assembled. Polish it over time...
