I don't know much about the Fighter Group situation, but Gen. Doolittle did want to send all B-24s from the 8th to the 15th Air Force and have the 8th become an all-B-17 force. The Third Air Division did re-equip, but VE Day halted the plan to also convert the 2nd Division. I don't think it would be a stretch to believe he would have preferred standardizing his fighters as well, logistics would certainly improve.
