If you donate a prise does this exclude you from the competition? Say you win would people fear favoritism?

This is a good idea and I like the calender idea as well (though we have to figure out the legalities of that, legal stuff stopped us last time a calender was attempted)

If our eventual goal is to do a calender then we should limit to 13 categories
(12 months and a cover). if not then we should probably limit it to 10. We'll have to figure out prizes and such but this is an interesting idea and bears further discussion. I'm at work now so haven't been able to go through all the messages in this thread. I'll try to come up with something more concrete tonight.

I think I could come up with a prize for best L-bird shot.

I've got a couple of ideas for prize in the Maintenance category. I'll run them by Scott and JDK to see what they think then post a picture or two.

Setting up the rules and regs up front and holding to them is most important in a "contest" such as this. I know a couple Pro Photographers that have been judges at some local photo competitions. I might be able to run this by them and get their input.

As for judging...impartiality is the key. Someone without a dog in the hunt, so to speak. Images should NOT have name or logos on their face in order to keep with that impartiality theme. size of image submitted should also be prescribed so all images "look" the same when it comes to judging. I will look for the rules of one of those competitions and see if we can't modify their outline to fit our own needs.

I like what I'm seeing so far. The prizes are excellent and I thank everyone who will be contributing them to this contest.

I think having one over all category with 1st 2nd 3rd place would be best with other awards for specific subject matter. I think we should let this be a peoples vote and not have specific judges, at least for the main prizes. Maybe those who contributed prizes can be the judges for the special awards.

As for posting them anonymously, that would be difficult to do since even if the photographer removed any identifying marks it would still appear under his name when he posted it. Also, removing copyright info from the pictures is probably not a good idea.

As for size, I typically size pictures to 800 pixels wide (11.11 inches across) for the registry, If you size it to this size and make it 72 dpi resolution this should be good for display without taking up too much bandwidth.

A couple of things to consider, should this be a short term contest over in a month or so or should it be a long term contest, say over in September or so, when the last airshow for the season is over? This will give people a chance to not only go through thier collections but also to actively strive to get great shots.

As for copyrights, if you enter a photo in the contest then you are agreeing to let the Warbirds Resource Group use that image on the site as well as a potential calender. If your not comfortable with this then please don't enter. Also, only submit pictures that have a hi-res version available that you are willing to provide if we need it. Thanks.

At the very least we will have a $%^%& Category encompassing the those flubbed or messed up shots. I have a secret prize in mind for this category.

Finally, I will be the final judge on all disputes.

Well thats it for now, lets keep the discussion going and we will narrow down the rules. I will create a special section for the contest once we get everything settled.

I will offer up some prizes. Books... used, historical biography or Warbird aviation related. Let me get my act together as far as naming the titles exactly... I can offer up at least 10-12 books. If it isnt too much trouble I could offer up some choices for the winners so they dont receive one they already have. (Can you tell I need to clean out a few duplicates in my collection!?)

In seeing the number of prizes being offered, perhaps two contests could be in order.

Have one which ends in March or so which would include any shots taken up until that day. Having one now will help keep the positive flow of the contest going. Plus people can get pumped up for the new season by looking through previous shots to submit. If a deadline were to be pushed to autumn, some of the energy may be lost by then.

Then have another one in November at the end of the show season for shots taken in '09.

G'day folks, appologies over the delay, but I've been thinging it over, then I forgot I hadn't posted!

Interesting point. I think if you donate a prize for a specific award (like 'Best L Bird') then you can't win your own prize - I'd hope we could work around that somehow. But as it's looking like it's going to be by WIX member votes, I can't see that's a problem.

Crucially, we need the prizes more than entries, if you think about it - I'm sure we'll get lots of entries... What do people think?
RyanShort1 wrote:

That would be great Ryan. Would that be US 'L Birds only', or all 'observation types' (Storch, Lysander, Auster AOP etc)? It's your prize, it's up to you.

Some good points there, Chris, and a copy of any rules would be most useful to avoid gotchas.

However I can't see how we can make it so people don't know whose pic is whose - and along with that, I'm hoping it'll be fun, rather than a tough competition with hair pulling, eye scratching and all that pro photographer stuff. Scott's point with it being unwise to post without ID is something we'll have to go for, I think.

At the moment I'm assuming it'll be 1 WIX member 1 vote, and specific awards (l bird, maint, artistic etc) given by the prizegiver, Scott to arbitrate. The only category that can't go in the main thing (fairly, without confusion) is the 'flubbed shots' one, IMHO.

So for entrants there'll be one class to enter, and the specific award givers will choose from that, as well as a people's choice 1st, 2nd, 3rd etc. On the side there'll be the flubbed pics (separate category) with Scotts 'special' prize.

Sorry, Doug, this is one I don't think fits with the main comp as the plans developing. :( Hold the idea, and we might get it to happen separately. We could run a separate pool for 'Most amusing photo' (with or without caption), but they'd need to be the person's own photo and caption. An open caption comp is fun, but doesn't fit, IMHO. Maybe if we get to a autumn competition as well?

Thanks a lot Scott.
I'm comfortable with Scott's other suggestions, they make sense and seem good to keep it viable. Hopefully it'll be fun, which is the point, not bragging rights. (Although they'll be cool too, of course.)

Anyone got any idea or modifications, sing out now, eh?

Great Dan, many thanks! Sounds good, the more prizes the merrier. Two things if you do offer this kind of prize - be prepared to mail anywhere in the world (surface is fine), and keep the offers simple and attreactive a couple of sets or singles 'either or' of about the same 'value' would be best, I suggest.

Well, we are in the middle of our show season here... ;) Seriously though I've no strong feelings on this datewise. That said, let's concentrate on doing one competition, soon because we want to close the prize deals ASAP, I think, and if it's a success we can do it later in the year too. Seem sensible?

Any thoughts, lets have 'em, and we can get cracking.

Cheers

I guess it's only fair that I can't win my own prize, but I'd certainly compete for the other categories with an L-bird shot.
As far as the L-birds question - I'd be willing to do a separate category for both - one for US and one for foreign. I'd also consider (interest, folks? I've got a book in mind...) doing a different category with a different prize for best reenacted aircraft scene (ie. not the kissing sailor and it could be airborne OR on the ground) from a WWII photo - markings and aircraft details could differ - and you'd have to post a copy of the WWII picture as well. On second thought maybe someone else should co-sponsor it... 'cause I have a few ideas. If not, I'll sponsor it.

Ryan
