I am working on documenting the history of UH-1 helicopters that are currently on display in museums or as a part of a memorial. The website I am using to document what I find is http://www.viswanphoto.weebly.com I just recently decided to accept submission for the ones I will not be able to visit personally. I am very interested in this project and hope every Huey fan out there helps build the site.

Right now I am working on UH-1D/H sn 65-09700 that is located at the Kansas Museum of Military History in Wichita. I do have the VHPA CD and there is no record of this helicopter. Does anyone have any information on this bird? I saw one article that claimed it was a USAF helicopter before it was transferred to the Army but that is all I have been able to find.

We saw the Huey 2 weeks ago and again this Saturday, I cant seem to pass this museum when it's open. There is also a H-23 at the gate of the Helicopter school in Mineral Wells.

The AF didn't own any Ds...
It may have been loaned as a trainer or for some test purpose. The Army was fairly generious with its aircraft. I recently learned that the Army loaned the Navy a few D models for antarctic use in the late 60s, before the Navy got their own UH-1N Twin Hueys. They were orange with NAVY markings. Neat looking.

In 1970, they got 30 HH-1Hs (70-2457-2486) used for local crash rescue to replace the HH-43s, later they supplemented UH-1Fs for missile site support (back when the Twins were busy in Special Ops roles or resuce work). I some believe were fitted with spray booms for 3M's "Light Water" foam system.

And today, I understand the AF has some upgraded (pointed noses, etc.) TH-1Hs at Ft Rucker for training. I'd guess these were given to the AF from Army staocks and modified at AF expense but carry their original Army serials.

If anyone knows differently, I'd be interested in learning.

Wow, those rotor blades from the hotel are more historic than the helicopter... They were used at the hotel for the winging party after graduation... the (former) students jumped through the rotors into the pool , usually dressed in boots and flight suits.
This brings back some very early memories, somewhere I have pics of my Dad's winging ceremony at the hotel and guys jumping into the pool... most went into the drink with a budweiser in one hand.
If I ever can find those pics I'll try and post them.
That sort of thing is pretty much history, but classes like my Dad's lost something like 40-50% of the class KIA or seriously wounded in SE Asia at the time....The current military couldn't cope with losses like we had in vietnam IMHO.

I visited the grounds of the former Fort Wolters a few weeks ago. It is a bit sobering when you think of all of the helicopter pilots that trained there and went to Vietnam. My grandparents were married during WWII, so I have a small attachment to the place. There are still lots of things to see there. I think a lot of it hasn't changed much over the last 70+ years. I bought a class picture from WWII on eBay taken there of an infantry platoon in 1941 and the barracks in the background of the photo look the same today as they did then! I explored the old Beach Army Hospital during my visit, but that's another story for another forum:)

I think it's great that the city has maintained the arch at the main gate. It looks almost like it did when the post was active. Here's some photos of it including the gate guards.
