She belongs here for sure, a real veteran. She may deserve long term preservation tho, as she's the real deal, not a stateside trainer.
Any news from the lads down under?

Doesn't sound right to me - I can't see them wanting to sell it, given how much work they've put into it and that it's the 'jewel in their crown'. (I think they probably feel that as they recovered and restored it, it 'belongs' there. Buy as ever, assuming you are right, buyer collects. ;) )

IF it is the right aircraft, anyone getting excited about restoring it to fly would need to bear in mind that it world involve a new, complete rebuild, the current restoration being to static standards.

I've seen some other 'project' P-38 stuff, and if you really want one and have the readies, it can be done. No, I can't say any more with any authority, and I'm not speculating further.

I suspect we might be talking another airframe from that unit.

Not that one... It is already restored (to static). This is a different airframe.

Do you know which? Have you seen it?

Howdy All

This aircraft is a 431st FS/475th FG P-38H-5-LO S/N 42-66534 and was recovered in 2004.
Not much left of it besides the outer wings, booms and tailplane
The aircraft was part of an MIA case. Pilots remains were not found with aircraft remains.

It looks like the Pilot force/crash landed the aircraft near Wewak
The whole center section catching fire and melted away. Engines were pretty badly burnt to a crisp.

This aircraft/recovery was featured in an old issue of Classic Wings

The aircraft project would basically be an id for a reconstruction with some original components

HHHHmmmmm. From Mark Clark's description on the Courtesy website:

Mark Clark wrote:"The estimated cost and timelines to restore this aircraft back to airworthy status, considering knowledge by experienced restorers for achieving this goal, are reasonable."

A complete, new build, data-plate restoration being "reasonable"? That "reasonable" sounds like at least 3 to 4 million USD. Is that what the latest definition of reasonable is? It sounds like he is substituting "reasonable" for "possible".

What am I missing? :?

Howdy,
Bob Jarrett owner of Classic Jets Fighter Museum, recovered S/N.42-66534 to use as a parts source for his other project S/N. 42-66841

More parts may have been added to s/n.42-66534

Was recovered 2003 not 2004

Sources from Warbirds Directory and Pacificwrecks website

See the pics of aircraft below: http://www.pacificwrecks.com/aircraft/p ... 66534.html

Mod Edit - I've just added a few spaces (the space bar is your friend with URLs!) so it should work OK now. JDK.

There are a lot of good parts there, but unfortunately no cockpit or wing center section (burned away). Wings, part of one nacelle, tailbooms and empennage appear to be good rebuild candidates (as opposed to merely patterns).

Hopefully Courtesy can find a buyer!

I wish Rod Lewis would buy it and send the project to Nelson Ezell out at Breckenridge. Even though they just finished the Red Bull plane (N25Y), they still have all of the tools, jigging and specialized equipment to rebuild a P-38. They've been on record as saying they would like to restore another one!

Fri Jan 23, 2009 2:11 pm

Yeah, but maybe Jerry Yeagan should buy it and send it there.

Jerry Yagen already has several P-38 projects. I think at least one of them is being restored at Wanagratta, if I'm not mistaken.

Ah! Beat me too it. As soon as I opened my big mouth I did a little reading and found this on the Pacific Wrecks site.

Gerald Yagen adds:
"The Lightnings that you saw [at Precision Aerospace] in Australia are mine along with some others that I have."
