That's the plane used to ferry the Buran (Russia's space shuttle).

It is a cool plane. It outlasted their shuttle

It still visits CFB Trenton once or twice a year, under contract to Canada to carry stuff to and from Afghanistan.

Does anybody know if they finally completed the second one?

I think I was there for that second video of the beast that you posted.

That's at the Abbotsford Airshow... probably 1988.

I was a little boy then, but was still totally blown away by it. I got to walk though it too. They had the nose open as well as the loading bay in the back so people could walk on through.

I met a lot of friendly Russian pilots at that show... Being so young I didn't care whether the Cold War was still going on or not, I just wanted autographs from anyone in a flight suit. I ended up getting a few cool Russian pins from a couple pilots. One with a picture of Lenin on it.

Anyways... that plane is really cool.

It was probably in 1990 as they brought the airplane to KPAE as part of the "GOODWILL GAMES' in Seattle. (thanks for not much Ted Turner)
I saw it fly @ Abottsford and EVERYONE was scared to death, then blown away by the crew lifting off and as the gear was coming up, they rolled into a 90 degree left bank at what looked like 30 feet of altitude!! Around the pattern it went just a docile as a 182. There's footage of it doing that @ Abottsford ( I think it is on the old series'Great Planes') and most of the left wing is hidden behind the trees that border the field. The feds from the Seattle FISDO said 'we'll have none of that here thank you'

While it was @ KPAE for AIRFAIR we loaded all kinds of relief supplies on board for an earthquake somewhere in Central Asia Minor. We packed everything that showed up on board (including a few cars the crew bought here) and filled less than half of the cabin, they still had room to load the Sukoi 26 demo teams aircraft and support vehicles plus lots of GSE they'd brought. The airport had to borrow two 1 inch thick steel road repair sheets from the state to place under the huge APU exhausts that pointed straight down from each MLG sponson and were melting the airports compass rose asphalt. When they fueled, one of the F.E.'s had to do all the transfer switching at the fueling panel because, obviously it was all in cyrilic and there must have been 50 or more switches and X feed control switches and dials. When it left after dark that night it shook the entire neighborhood to the point that neighbors called us @ TRAMCO to b!tch about the noise (Luddite warning from Mukilteo!)

Somewhere in my slides I have a shot of the twin fins and horizontal stab with what appear to be tiny antennas on the fuselage, put the slide on the wall and it's two people standing on this whales back and they are teeeeny

Saw it perform at Farnborough. 'Myra' means 'Dream' ISTR, and it's certainly dreamlike!



If you haven't been under it on approach, you haven't seen a very big thing landing.
