The discussion on the Sicilian Corsair raises the question of preserving corroded wrecks that are beyond restoration. The A6M at Kagoshima shows what can be done.

I think corroded airframes should be displayed especially if they are almost completely unrestorable.

There is something about looking at old wreckage that connects you with its history. You start asking questions like, "Did the pilot survive?", "How come it crashed?", "What experiences had the pilot, and the plane for that matter seen during the war?"

In a way, looking at wreckage like that is more real than seeing a beautifully restored airplane. There are so many new parts, and often restorations look TOO perfect.

It's like reading a textbook compared to talking with someone that was there.

If I was to see 41-2446, (or Lady Be Good, or even Black Jack) displayed in such a way, I think it would be a reasonably Happy Ending.

Back in 2003 I visited the aviation museums at Chino. One of the displays was a corroded, crashed Betty bomber in a island diorama. This was probably the most riveting display I had ever seen. It stopped me in my tracks for 20 minutes.

I guess he started working for Fighter Rebuilders after the movie career went south. As I understand it he felt he only got offered the same narrow script, and Harrison Ford usually got away with the girl... :lol:
