I don't think either of those would make much of a race plane.

its all about seeing and hearing a WWII fighter being pushed a bit...(not to the breaking point of course)

I wonder what a FW 190 with an aerodynamic clean up and an R3350 would be like? As for a Spit it would be fun but they were never very fast. They made one attempt at a speed record and really couldn't pull it off even with revised canopy and gap filling and sealing.

Jim says the Spit Mk 18 cruises about the same speed as the P-51 but uses 20 gal an hour more.

That is probably true the problem comes in getting from cruise speed to maximum possible. The Mustang is just a faster design than the Spitfire, probably having to do with the airfoil sections used.
