Looks like maybe the treeline had everyone making a steeper than normal descent to avoid landing long? We all like to make 'em pretty but I've learned more from things I've botched than things I did well (and didn't give another thought). I'm not a Mustang pilot, but he kept it straight and that's gotta count for alot. Did the Yak depart the far side of the marked runway? Hard to tell for certain - if he did, I still see value in getting her going straight before making an abrupt bid back to the centerline which may only worsen the whole event. Looks like there was some loose dirt on the field, which is/was what caused the Mustang to yaw and pitch a bit. I think the Yak overflew the dirt areas, but dropped it on right after and got a nice bounce. I've found braking action to be nil when I'm about 8' high after a bounce...

After initial touchdown, the Mustang pilot tried to force the tail onto the ground. The wing was still flying (had lift) and it was not ready to settle down on the mains. He should have raised the tail and held it off till it came down on its own as it decelerated. Would have been more controlable and less scary.

Agreed, I was never a fan of those "in-betweener" landings. Either get the tail up in the clean air and plant some weight on the mains, or wait till the tailwheel can be firmly down before you let anything touch. (And hold the stick back!)

What happened here in the video gave me the most gray hairs in the 6, when the tail starts flopping around and the rudder helplessly tries do do something against it to little avail.

'course on a paved runway what's my excuse?

That makes since as it looks like they have plenty of runway and why they only want to use the first part only. Even a C-172 if go to land and you have a little to much airspeed it will float and every time you go to flare it will keep flying... :wink:

it looked like he had a pretty good head of steam up on short final and then went for a 3 point at the last minute. Don't change your mind once you commit to a landing. look at your speed and just let the plane do its thing accordingly, after all it is smarter than you!
