Jim Cavanaugh's father " Mr. C " passed away yesterday after a long illness. He was a mechanic on PT 19s in WWII and on C47's for the FAA after. He was the inspiration for Mr. Cavanaugh's aviation interests. He spent many days here at the museum helping with restorations and projects until he became too weak to work. He worked on our PT 19 restoration which we named after his wife "Rosalie"He was a real character, and hard a very dry sense of humor. We gave him a ride in the C47 last summer, and although he wasn't able to speak, he had a smile on his face.

Sad to hear. On one of my early visits to the museum Mr. C Senior waved me and a friend into the workshop to show us the Christen Eagle he was working on. Nice man and it was great that he took the time to show us the project.

Thanks for the heads-up, Doug; although I'm sure we all wish it was for different reasons.

Condolences to the entire Cavanaugh clan.

I am so sorry to hear this. My sincere condolences to Jim and and his family and the entire museum. He will be missed but many. I drove past the C-47 just today here in Midland and thought what a special tribute, not knowing. Really.

The story behind the name of the C47. " Mr. C" was an A & P and worked on projects here at the museum. When ever I would ask him when a project would be finished, he would reply " Tuesday" with a sheepish grin. We restored the C47 at R & B airframes in Sherman, Texas. I had the idea to name it " Mr. "C " it's Tuesday". We did the restoration with the help of R & B, unknown to Mr. C. When it was up and going, we had him come to the museum on a Tuesday, and delivered the plane. It was a heck of a suprise to him, and he really got a chuckle out of it. It then got emotional as 4 of his kids were here to greet the C47. C8 is for Mr. "C" and his 8 kids.
