This topic drips of irony. The AN/APS-13 used the pictured three-element Yagi antenna. Dr. Hidetsugu Yagi patented this antenna design in 1926 and again in 1940 in JAPAN. The Japanese never fully grasp its wartime potential. When the Manhattan Project’s Fuzing and Firing group modified AN/APS-13 in the proximity role (cover word: ARCHIE) for the required ground zero overpressure, his patents came back to haunt Japan in a big way.

We never had a chance for inflight test, because no one ever got close enough on my tail........budda bing!!

Yes, we just never had a bandit available on the test card days to check it out and to do any adjustments. When the owner was out, we mostly flew close formation or rat racing, where 'the cone' was never transgressed....that is....in the turning flights, no one was ever astern to get the APS to light up. Maybe we'll plan a test flight when it comes up for annual. (But, I wonder in these days of precise micro avionics, if the APS-13 would emit a broad signal that would affect any local radars or air traffic control frequencies. Sorta like the WW2 six channel crystal radios would likely be so very illegal due to their wide frequency transmissions. Maybe the radio guys could chime in on this one.)
