This may be old news, if it is I will apologise, but I just found this whilst trolling around on the net..........
http://www.flysouth.co.za/news/archive/2003-12-12/Once-proud%20Iraqi%20Air%20Force%20reaches%20end%20of%20the%20line%20the%20junkyard.htm

That sure as heck ain't a Mig 23 in the photo, I'd say more likely a captured Iranian F-4.

Is there any chance of any thing being saved and are any of the coalition forces taking anything home with them for their represensitive museums?

No hairy:

Look closely, it is a MiG 23. The nose and air intakes look a little like the F-4.

Just doing a quick bit of arithmetic.....
50 MiGs at approx 8 ton empty at $750 a ton gets you $300,000.
Not bad for investment of $150,000 (That a profit of about $3000 per MiG)
and thats in Iraq. Worth 3 times that as export.

I wonder if the scrap merchants got any of the older stuff, like the furies? Also are there any Mig 25's in western museums? Kind of an important aircraft for NASM i should think...

I agree, a MIG-25 would accompany the B-70 at the NMoUSAF or a B-58 for that matter.

I stand corrected...........
http://www.flymig.com/aircraft/MiG-23/1.htm

The two horizontal splitters in the intake points to Mig-23 as well as what appears to be a pitot mount just forward of the winscreen.

Its amazing how similar this section is to an F-4......

Another give away that it is a Mig-23 is the intake extends above the level of the bottom of the canopy. On the F-4 the top of the intake is below the bottom of the canopy

Sorry Sorry Sorry
I'm into A-6s, P-3s and B-25s.
I take it back Rob, you may keep
searching the woods of Maine
with Dickie for the White Bird.
