Do 24K

Hello Folks:

I was wondering if any of you know how many Do-24K-1s, and K-2s were actually put into service for the Dutch? Several websites say how many were planned to be built, but aren't totally specific about how many actually served with the Dutch before the Germans overran them in 1940 or 1942.

Anyway, I think I might know what the answer is, but want to hear it from you.

hi chris, i know there were a few used in their south pacific dutch east indies territories just prior to ww 2 & were subsequently decimated by the japanese at the early onset of hostilities after pearl harbor.as to quantity, i have no clue. as to there losses.... either shot down, or destroyed on the ground or moored at anchor. take care, tom

6 ex NEIAF DO24's escaped the advancing Japanese and were transferred into RAAF Service for use in Australia and the SWPA

These aircraft in the NEIAF serial range of X-5 to X-24 were numbered A49-1 to A49-6

Ok SO that accounts for about half of the K-1s, but what happened to X2, X3, X6, X11-X19, X21, X22, and X31-X34?

These supposedly went to the Netherlands, but never reached Australia.

A substantial front fuselage/cockpit section survived and was converted into a house-boat that was moored on the Murray River near Echuca Vic. Australia. I last saw it in the early 80s. Never pinned an ID on it.

Here is some of the fates for the NEI Do-24K's

X1, X3, X20, X23, X28 destroyed on Raid at Broome 3 Mar 42
X5, X7, X8, X9, X10 and X24 as A49-1 to A49-6 respectivily
X6, X13, X22, X30, X31, X32, X33, X35, X36 and X37 detsroyed during air raids at Surabaya during early Feb 1942
X16 lost on ferry flight to Ceylon 28 Feb 42
X21 shot down on recce flight to Bali 23 Feb 42
X29 Lost after force landing on sea 10 Feb 42
X34 Shot down during attack against Japanese Destroyer Dec 1941

which leaves X2, X4, X11, X12, X14, X15, X17, X18, X25, X26 and X27 unaccounted for, although one of these was lost pre-war.
