This is the place where the majority of the warbird (aircraft that have survived military service) discussions will take place. Specialized forums may be added in the new future

Ollie, be serious..........
Oh, I'm very happy with my German aircraft.
How cool is that, eh? Not many people own and fly a genuine Luftwaffe bird!!
I'd only trade it for a Spit...
You would also trade it for a Flugwerk 190

Interesting discussion guys, keep it going..
Steve, we usually get free fuel when we bring the Harvard to a show, since in our Province, it's like the biggest Warbird around.
And Michel, a Spit is a Spit.

Right now i'm excited by L-5s...maybe an L-4 or L-19/O-1.
Why? because it's a warbird i can actually afford without selling the house, cars, truck, dogs...wife.

My appreciation for some of the smaller trainer like the PT-17, N3N, Fairchild’s and the SNJ is growing. It seems that even a/c like the C-47, C-46s and PBYs are left out of the hype. I’d love to see more of them in the air at airshows.
For years I was drawn pretty much only by the front-line warbirds. That was started to change.

Oh you could probably find a way to fit it. The hard part would be figuring out how to keep it torquing the car over onto its roof when you step on the gas!
Mike
I thought about that, make it all wheel drive with one radial in front and one in back, aligned face to face. Though in this configuration it would probably just spin in circles. Guess I'll have to stick with the JATO packs.

Hi Ollie et al--
Interesting thread on a worthwhile topic. I'm not a pilot (maybe someday, if the money tree drops a branch on my head!); but I've come to think that in terms of "fun per dollar", the Warbugs are hard to beat. Certainly all my most enjoyable flights have been in small aircraft, with top honours probably going to a Stearman "flip" over the Ottawa River a few years ago. Would I choose a Stearman for airshows, had I the luxury? Quite possibly...
Re fitting a Pratt to one's Ford Focus, that reminds me of the '55 Chevy streetrod/dragster built in Oz a few years ago, with a Merlin (or more likely the Meteor ground-vehicle variant--I forget) under the hood...and painted in full 352FG P-51 livery!
Bit surprised AirJim hasn't shown up here as he's an L-bird fan. Talking again of installing oversized engines, Jim also likes Furies (as do I), so I once drew him a "racing L-2" cartoon...of the only Centaurus-engined, RCN-liveried Taylorcraft anyone will ever likely see. He made it into a T-shirt. Time will tell whether he builds it for real.
Cheers
S.

Tim,
You are right... the initial draw seems to be the fighters and bombers but the more shows you go to the interest grows. Now at Oshkosh and even the local shows I go hunting for the unique. Sure I visit the Mustang parking area at Oshkosh but I will go swing thru the liaison area when I see an L13. Also I gave an amazing AT11 a good looking over when I spotted it.
I believe as time goes by we will see more unique, rare, one of a kind aircraft showing up on the airshow scene. Why? Because restoration shops are now taking the time to make parts (and owners are paying for) that no one wanted to make before.
Who will be the first to spot the Boeing L15 when it flies again? Who will line up when a Curtiss Owl taxis in? Someone might even build a P66. Now the F82 will be all over the magazine covers but I'll still be excited to see the "little guys" get some coverage.

Ollie - excuse my ignorance - what warbird do you have?
Also, here in Wendover we almost always have a few T-6s, a Howard, and PT-13 (local CAF wing) at our annual show. The nice thing is a T-6 is LOUD and fun to watch - PLUS we can give rides!
A couple of years ago a nice lady in her 80's bought a ride because her husband had been a bomber pilot and now that he was on to a better world she felt like she wanted to get closer to him by seeing what he had done during the war (training).
Do we take care of our local trainers? Yup - you bet! Plus I'm quite sure Mary Dilda and her T-6 get appearance fees.

Ollie has a sharp looking FWP.149. Here are two pics taken at Carp (Ottawa) in 2003...

Personally I don't care what it is as long as it's got a radial engine, now if I could just figure out how to fit one to my Ford Focus....
I'm looking to install a J85 in my ZX5....needs a little more umph for passing!
The Auster series of light aircraft are one often overlooked warbug, would love to have another AOP 6 or possibly a AOP 9.

As Mike already said, I fly around in a Focke-Wulf FwP.149D.
Loads of fun to fly, plus you can bring three friends along for the ride!
Very nice shots Mike!

"CROWD PLEASER"
That is the buzz word used by airshow organizers selling tickets.
Crowd Pleaser plus rarity equals appearance fees.
Some crowd pleasers include the T-6, Sea Fury, Corsair, B-17 etc.
The T-6's and and Stearmans are so numerous that if you hit the show boss up for an appearance fee , he'll just call the other guy up and offer him a free hotel room and tickets to the bar-b-que! Oh yeah, and gas if he flies in the show![/b][/u][/i]

Steve, just saw that car this past Sunday at the Pacific Coast Dream Machines Show in Half Moon Bay (CA). The car is called "Final Objective" and has a Mark IX Merlin installed. Driver sits where the backseat would be, on the right side.

IFF?
What does a 1950s IFF system look like/ /work? I'd like to talk about this more Saturday. I hated IFF in the Navy, what a pain in the tushy.
