Muddy...I too was raised in the south. Virginia. Born 1935. Spent quite a bit of time in Arkansas (my mother's home) and Mississippi.
Came to understand that all "niggers" aren't black. I was taught that "nigger" was a certain attitude and/or lifestyle not restricted to black people. I was taught this by a neighbor who was black.

No it is NOT of Norse origin. Their word is Nyggarde which is a corruption of the Latin for 'black'.
Niggard has been used in English meaning mean, ungenerous and unwilling to help for a very long time. Probably of French origin.
Chaucer in Troylus in 1374.

As to my age, I'm 69. I served in the RAF and the AAC as a pilot for a full uniformed career and then moved into the Intelligence services. After that I started an Antiques business in my home town. Did well enough to sell up and retire early.

No Linguist will agree with you, tehre buddy. Niggardly is from the Old Norse hnoggr, meaning stingy. Before you start spouting sugar you learnt on te internet, take a lingusitics class THere are whole areas of science devoted only to the roots of our words and they all pretty much agree taht Latin and old Norse don't share but a tiny bit of their roots. Oh wait, none of this matters: You've decided taht you get to talk down your nose and I don't and left the room. See ya. Don't let taht attitude hurt you on your way out, you . :wink:

Boy we should all just get together and make some shine and talk about teh difference between white trash and niggers and how behind every woodpile tere's a nigger waiting to jump out, and maybe shake off our sheets and see if we cain't remember the words to DIxie while we pat each othe ron the back and explain how nigger ain't a bad word cause some dood says it's fine as long as you cross your fingers and spit in the dirt after you say it. in the original movie starring Richard Todd as Guy G., Nigger was it. This PC bulls$it is getting to me.

My old home town had a football stadium stand named after our most famous rugby player - Nigger Brown..

some "bar steward" complained that this was racist......phaaaaaaarrrrrkkkk! :evil:

I have learned much from folks on both sides of this discussion...just not in this thread.

Allow me to paraphrase a theme that's shown up in several different warbird disucssions around here...

When you've got the money to remake the movie, you can call the dog what you want. This one's his movie, so let's thank him for giving us another warbird movie to watch.

The 617 Squadron story is much bigger than any one word. Let's focus on the rest, which is what this forum's about.

Just a general point; if anyone wants their views to be taken seriously, it's at least polite to hear out others. Dropping a bomb and running isn't exactly playing fair. No one has to post, but if you do, try and convince through rational argument and accurate evidence, not aggression, or the rest. By all means walk away, sometimes that's the best thing to do. Thank you.

There's not a release date for the movie as yet, AFAIK.

You're both right.
fotobass for pointing out that this was not teaching anybody anything (although I was pretty proud of remembering that niggardly wasn't from the latin)

and James for offerering beer all round. he DID offer fosters all round, right?

And it went veering 2way off topic and taht was my fault. My only point was ever that it isn't a pc choice but rather a dollars and cents choice. Too many people will be confused by the whole thing and become inflamed and rant about it. So Jackson is better off finding a softer way to peddle the dog's name (financially) and that is all she wrote, prolly. In the end it is his piece of art, and his dime. And Peter Jackson is no fool.

eveyrbody knows they didn't have bombsites in England back then. They wuz lucky if they had em a pilot who had his spectacles on and wasn't three sheets to the wind. Hell this movie is about a pilot couldn'ty even make his own bomb stay on the ground. Damned things went bouncin all over the place. They were lucky if they got issued maps, cause they're wasn't no paper left by then.

We used to dreeeaaammmm of 'aving a bombsight. We 'ad to make do wiv a popsicle stick sticking out the nose plexi, and when it were pointin' right, we 'ad to roon back to teh bombbay wiv a screwdriver and joomp oop an' down 'til the bomb let go.

(Sure hope some of you know the Python sketch 'The Four Yorkshiremen', otherwise I've just wasted yer time)
