1/48th Scale B-17C/D Conversion

Were you aware that the flaps are shorter and the ailerons are longer on the Y1B-17.?

Yup, but thanks for the info anyway. The flap chord is slightly less on the YB also. The actuating system appears to be pretty much the same as later models.

The YB also doesn't have the fairing over the outer-to-inner wing panel junction like the later airplanes. I've removed the strap fairings on the project wings and one wing got the flap and aileron surgery before I slowed down on that part of the project. There are just so many little details that make the YB a fun model to build.

If you need any information let me know. I have a quite extensive B-17 library.
I have an Rareplanes Y1B-17 in 1/72 scale and am going to convert a Minicraft /Academy B-17B to a Y1B-17 using the Rarplanes kit as a guide. Gordon Stevens did an excellent job on the kit and I never knew how amny subtle differences there were between the Y1B 17's/ 299 and the B-17B wings and fuselage etc.

I cannot wait to see your completed model. Is it going to be a Y1B-17 or the 299?

It will be a Y1B-17 assigned to the 38th Recon Squadron circa fall 1941, probably ship #33.

When I started researching the project a few years ago I thought the YB and 299 would be fairly similar in fuselage interior details, but there isn't much except the basic shape that is really the same. The first YB is also somewhat different than the rest of the pre-production run, or at least was when first put into service. Just small stuff, but interesting all the same.

I've got a pretty fair number of detail photos of the YBs also, perhaps we need to share info to make both our projects as accurate as we can.

The XB-15 will be a crowd pleaser when you get it done! I like "big" model projects like that--I started to plan a 1/48th scale B-36 twenty five years ago but only got so far as getting the three-views done and collecting up some parts I could source from other kits. I used to keep a propeller and spinner (1/32 Corsair prop and P-40 spinner) on my workbench to motivate me to start it, but now I can't even find that!
