Memorial Day

For those of us in the United States, today is Memorial Day, a day when we honor all men and women who died in service to our country.

Yesterday we were examining the interior of the ball turret on display at the Vintage Flying Museum, and I decided to climb in for a fit-check. After Steve buttoned up the hatch we went over the controls and features of the turret. I then had a little quiet time to just sit there and think, and I contemplated just how serious the business of warfighting really is. The following photo is my meager tribute to all those kids who served, and even now serve, their countries in the cause of freedom and never got the chance to come home.

Adding to todays Memorial of our serviceman, a couple of the USS Arizona Memorial I took a couple weeks ago at Pearl Harbor.

I don't think many people traveling to visit military historical areas in CA, make it to this one. Another National Cemetary to visit if your in the SF area is Golden Gate Cemetary in San Bruno, Ca. Today, courtesy of the Boy Scouts, every grave wears a flag today, around 139,000 interments.

The CenTex Wing, CAF was busy this weekend. Saturday we did a four-ship over Boerne, TX (Ober's place) for a memorial service for a Lt. Col. who was killed in Iraq. Today we had a three target mission. Bastrop at 1015, Salado at 1045, and Temple at 1145. It was difficult flying today as we aren't used to flying in near perfect weather! On the way back to San Marcos from Temple we just HAD to make a pass over the Texas State Capital and down Congress Ave!

Took these last March. The Pentagon Memorial has 184 Memorial Units.
The units (125) with the end facing the Pentagon represent a victim in the Pentagon. The units (59) facing away from the building represent a victim on Flight 77. Ages range from 3 years old to 71.

My mom and I went to visit my dad who is buried at the DFW National Cemetery in Dallas on Memorial Day, he actually passed on Memorial Day 2007. The ceremony was truly moving. The keynote speaker was Col. "Barney" Barnum a Vietnam Medal of Honor Receipient and the Missing Man Formation was courtesy of the 301st Fighter Wing 457th Fighter Squadron, "The Spads", based at NAS Ft. Worth JRB - my former unit. I was proud that they did they did the missing man formation over my dad's final resting place. Very fitting for a former F-100 Crew Chief.

I've never been to Arlington, but I'm sure the feeling is quite the same.

My wife and I were at the Marine Corps Memorial at sunset last summer and I snapped this shot from my cell phone. Even though I've lived in the D.C. area since 1975, this was the first time that I actually visited the memorial. Being there at sunset was very, very stirring.

My Memorial Day was unique in that we had to visit New Jersey and while there I went to my old home town ... Perth Amboy, NJ ... they put up a beautiful Military Memorail including a "Wall of Honor" commerating all Perth Amboy natives who served in the Military over the years ...

and there I found my own name engraved on the granite wall ...
