Calling all Spitfire, Hurricane and Fury pilots...

I was curious about the fighter's control stick, that is in a lot of the planes. Its a circular configuation, rather than just a stick. I've seen it in games and in the movies, but never thought to ask... What, if any, is the advantage to this design? And what other British planes or other countries had this design? Just curious in Orlando...

Pilatus P-3 has the British-style handle, and I like it very much, you can rest your hand on it when you fly around.
