I have to agree with B29 that it is not a C-119.

Look at the main gear.., it retracts into the wing.., not a nacelle!

I was originally going to say a C-7.., but no engine nacelle around the gear!

I'm leaning toward B-50/C-97.

It has the classic forward V brace with the jack screw.

Could have been B-29 but the wheels seem to be later style.

Gary should be able to ID this.

Here are pictures of my C-97 main landing gear for comparison.....

This first shot is just to give you better detail of the wheel assembly......

This second shot gives more of a top view of the landing gear......

And finally, here is the "V" brace for the C-97 main gear and where it connects to the spar..........

Here is a B-29 crash (below)

These two just remind me of the same aircraft.., maybe just the wheel well.., to me they look similar.., but maybe because just the main central spar survived so it reminds me of this shot?

These are the only photos I have. Shortly after these were taken, the wreckage disappeared and I presume was scrapped.

It is definitely a transport aircraft, based on the size of the wreckage. I initially thought C-124, myself, but had no corroberating evidence.

The wreckage was located here: 32.891867,-80.026678
not far from the end of rwy 33.

C-124 is about TWICE THE SIZE of any of these other aircraft we are talking about here.., figured there would be a great deal more wreakage for a MASSIVE C-124!
It is a little strange that they would cart it away without any word.., did you inquire with anyone else at the base?

The wheel hub visible in the third wreckage photo definately appears to match the KC-79/B-50.
