The first ship model I ever built was the SS United States. That was when she was riding high, the early to late fifties. Funny how you remember things like that. Only a few more years and it all goes away. What was this post about anyway?

The biggest problem with preserving a ship is that it sits in water, and so long as it does sit in water, it's going to require frequent maintenance, whether the ship actually sails again or not.

Money can make anything happen. The problem is that the people who have the kind of money to preserve a ship don't spend it there. It would be great if there was a "David Tallichet of Ships", but no such person exists that I am aware of.

The Cabot was a huge CF. One wonders why the NHC, which is so quick to protect submerged airplanes, didn't step in on a ship that was the last of her kind, and the only WWII era carrier still basically in WWII configuration.

There is talk that the Saratoga or Forrestal will end up being a museum. There is already talk of preserving CVN-65 Enterprise as a museum...I imagine it would be similar to what they have done with the Wisconsin.
