Oh, but that was simply lovely. I dearly wish I could be there for the airshow... but I did get the next best thing last month, a chance to sit in 3579 and watch as Andrej took the engine up to max RPM while I held onto the port wingtip. Absolutely breathtaking.

Wow - neat film

couple of questions - this plane doesn't seem to have the same supercharger " whine" as the one in the French air show - I plead ignorance - is it the same engine?

secondly - back to landings - is the ME109 a "stick it on all three" or "wheelie then drop the tail" plane? The landing looks a bit bouncey!

Hey Chris... the Messerschmitt is the former David Price Me-109E. Forget the werk nummer, but it was reputedly flown by Hans Jochaim Marseilles during the Battle of Britain. Not sure that I really buy that story, but it's a good one none the less. It was restored, mostly, in the UK several years ago. It is a Russian wreck. There was not much useable from the fuselage by the pictures I saw, but the wings looked really not bad at all. Reportedly they spent $300k just restoring the engine! Sure sounds delicious doesn't it.

Richard, it is indeed the real deal, as bellied in with 50% damage by H. J. Marseille on 2 September 1940 while serving with 2.(J)/LG1 (IIRC). I've got the loss listing on it, and plates indicating WNr 3579 were still present on the aircraft when recovered a few years back.

And yes, it was roundly suggested by all on the Flypast forum that running the engine up whilst facing the hangar might not have been the best idea... I wasn't responsible for that (thankfully!), but I do see their point and mentioned it to the crew in an email later.

Words don't adequately convey what a stunning piece of work this is in person... of course, as the webmaster of http://www.109lair.com, I suppose I'm a bit biased!
