Question on Volunteering for CAF

Tue Aug 11, 2009 7:21 pm

I wanted your honest opinion on something.

I received a call from Doug R. about my calendar of the pictures that I took of the P-51C Redtail and they wanted me to take it down because of copyright laws.

Now, I didn't know all of this and I am glad Doug called me to let me know because it meant alot hearing it from him then getting a letter from a lawyer.

The thing is now, I am a little disappointed in all of this, and am a little discouraged about the CAF and the higher ups that run things.

Am I just being bullheaded, or is their really truly good people within the organization.

I want to volunteer and feel my hours spent are appriciated and not just looked upon as someone doing the dirty work while the rest of them have fun.

Again, I am honored that Doug called me personally, but if the higher ups were having such difficulties with something so small and trival, how does it represent the Unit at St. Paul?

I would really like to volunteer, but really would like to hear more encouraging things from someone in the CAF.

If you took the photo, at a public venue, or in public view, then its your copywright, not theirs.
The CAF does not have the authority to tell you that you must take your photo down.

In Fact, I just might take a photo of a CAF Owned airplane and airbrush out the "tramp stamp", and post that photo on a public bulletin board.

Even if I put my photos in a calendar and sell them?

I thought I would have to have a release of some kind for even using the name Red Tail on my calendar?

So if I took my pictures, not used the name and then sold it, is that Legit?

I guess the folks who run the programmer were hot about it.

Unless they commissioned the photo, then its your copyright. Just because its their plane does not give them that right. Tell them to foxtrot off and threaten counter action for their trying to assert copyright over your property.

They were telling me the word RedTail is a trademark?

This was my cover.

Unless that airplane, or any correspondence about that airplane has this little ® or TM symbols near the words Red Tail.
Just because they use the words Red Tail, does not necessarily mean that they are copywrited.

Make sure your cup fits properly, Paul, because you'll be needing it.

The only thing I see Trademark copyrighted is the logo they use.

The words Red Tail are not copyrighted.
