Warbird Information Exchange

Now that the UH Center is up and running at Dulles, does anyone know what airframes are in active restoration for the Smithsonian?

I have been wondering about that also. They don't provide that kind of information on the website any longer. I know the emphasis was on getting the Space Shuttle at Dulles fixed up/restored but with that done I can only assume they are busy at Garber now.

They haven't replaced the leading edges on either wing as of last weekend when I was there.

The displays are great however they aren't very well set up for photgraphy with all of the small spots everywhere.

Last I was at Garber in October they were working on the Lysander, engine "bumps" over the OMS (sp?) engines on the Shuttle, and quite a few small ultralight aircraft because they were getting those hung in the gallery at Hazy. Even though we were there on a weekday, I saw one person working on the Lizzie and one or two more in other spots. For such a big and well stocked shop, it seems WAY underutilized.

...and Swoose, the P-61, Pfeil, and many more continue to deteriorate in the hangars out back. I sure wish they would, as Emeril would say, "kick it up a notch" and get some of the major planes into restoration and at least on their way...

The Lysander is now completed and hanging by the Corsair..here is what is happening over the coming year ( planned at least!)

Being prepared to go to Dulles

Farman Sport
Fowler-Gage
Curtiss N-9H
Stanley Nomad
Mitchell Superwing
Arlington Sisu
Nelson Dragonfly
Turner Meteor

These will all be here within 2 months. Here's what's going on: The Farman Sport gets hung over the simulators. Then the Fowler-Gage comes over and gets photographed while the SPAD moves next to Halberstadt. Fowler-Gage takes SPADs place. Then the N-9H comes over next to SPAD. That finishes off Early Flight for this year.
Meanwhile, the Lear 23 gets hung. Then the Nelson, Mitchell, Sisu, and Stanley get hung on the same arch. Later this summer, the two Hortens come over and are hung across from the Fw 190 and Ar 234. Then the He 219 fuselage/empennage and Do 335 come in. After that the Fw and Ar move across the aisle to their permanent places and set up the Germany WWII gallery. When they're out of the current locations, Irving moves up from under Enola Gay and goes along the gallery barrier. That will be the last move of the current fiscal year

Which two Hortens?

Three Horten GLIDERS were returned to Germany for restoration. As part of the deal one went on display at the new Berlin Museum recently( Ho 11L ), the other two were returned to the NASM.

Very interesting to say the least of what is coming to the Dulles Facility. Now, this may seem an odd question on the surface, as I do not know myself, but what has or is to become of the NASM facility on the Smithsonian grounds if the UH facility is to be so large and all encompasing ??
