Snowbirds and Hawk One -- a few photos from Nanaimo

Fri Aug 14, 2009 6:46 pm

Yesterday we had a visit in Nanaimo by the Snowbird jet display team so I scooted out to the airport and the inner harbour to take a few photos. Mine are not terribly good compared to those taken by professionals. But man are those pilots good. There was also a surprise appearance by a sabre jet ("Hawk One" based in Gatineau PQ, but you know about that already). All I could think of is what a wonderful cross-country trip that pilot must have experienced in a sabre. I suspect it would beat the standard Air Canada or WestJet travel experience compared to what us common folks are used to.

By the way the Nanaimo mini-airshow was in aid of the CHILD program. I haven't felt so good about dropping a few bucks into a charity box for a very long time.

When the Snowbirds did their back to back inverted (!) depiction of a heart in the sky to the sound of Sara MacLaughlin's music I was amazed. All this for a charity designed to help kids? I think somebody, somewhere, in the chain-of-military command, did something truly brilliant yesterday.

So today I'm very proud to be a Canadian. Both for the excellent medical care that my wife recently needed and for the Snowbirds and Hawk One, who took my mind off it. I hope you enjoy the photos.

P.S: This is a test as I have made very few posts in the past. Please forgive me if I screwed up. I'll post more when I see that it works.

Tim Lelsie wrote this article about flying the Sabre to Vancouver Island. Nothiing like the view from a Sabre while inverted at 33,000 over the mountains!

I think Dan Dempsey is flying Hawk 1 for her Island visit.
