The darn thing finally arrived this morning, so I flew two hours with it today.

Fit is a bit snug, but I think it'll loosen up a bit with time, no?

Well first you take a belt sander and sand off a little from each side of your head. Not too much though, it's easier to take off than put on. I learned that in wood shop

I drove from San Diego to Los Angeles with mine... at night so I wouldn't look too silly! It gave me a crushing headache (and I didn't have a belt sander). I had to return it and have them make another mold of my head (on display now at a museum of natural history no doubt) and try again. 2nd time fit great.

How about the details and a photo? Is it an HGU-55? Did you get that Oregon Aero Zetaliner yet?!

It's a HGU-55 with the TPL liner, I was told it was the best next to the Zeta thingie. I'll wear it for the summer, then decide if I want to upgrade.

I have the O2 receivers (for expandability, eh!), mic on a bracket à la "Flight of the Intruder" and a second visor, clear.

Black USAF carry-on bag, quick-disconnect plug with a longer cord.

I'm in love with it!

I'll have a picture of me inside the helmet while in the Focke-Wulf this week-end.

I promise!!

I have an old Navy flight helmet of my fathers and I was wondering a rough ball park figure on what it would cost to refit this for use. Any ideas?

Oh yeah, it doesn't have a liner, it used foam pads for fitting (those are toast but probably easily replaced. My bigger consideration is the electornics and such.

You can get a quote from Government Surplus in Hartford, CT.
They rebuild them. Don't have the contact info on them but I think they're still in the city.

OK, so here's the trick. Turn it upside down and fill it with dried beans, as full as you can. Then fill it with water, again as full as you can. Then let the beans do the work. Voila! New, larger helmet!

Had a buddy do that with his new $400 cowboy boots but he must have done something wrong as all he had the next morning was sticky beans and shreads of aligator hide on some soles...

Most helmets will take a little while to adjust or loosen up. If after wearing it for a while you still get headaches the helmet is too small and on some HGU-55 you can remove some padding if it has the plastic bubble padding. If its a custom liner you will need to have them refit you for the liner, as someome mentioned in a couple of post earlier.

When we get the new pilots they all receive new helmets and it takes them some time to get the liner adjusted to their skull features as in the roundness of the skull.

Thanks for the welcome. I've been a lurker for a while and just couldn't belive there where this many warbird nuts until I came around this great website.

I spend alot of time with aviatiors gear and airplanes. As far as the HGU-55 the Navy doesn't use that helmet anymore. The only pilots that use that helmet is the Blue Angels and that how I have expirience with it.

Well, the thread's five years old, so it should fit by now.
