Former Canadian Warplane Heritage Corsair 1973 and 1980's

Doug Fisher sent me the photo of the former Canadian Warplane Heritage Corsair (which I had the honor of working on and flying in for 10 fun filled years as crew chief) arriving at CWH in 1973 in VMF112 garb.
I included a shot of it in the 1980's and the link to Airpowers photos of it under rebuild.
I know they will have it being likely the nicest Corsair flying!

Anyone have any new updates on how the Corsair is coming up in Idaho?

Just noticed it had the full tail wheel door in the 1962 photo. I wonder what happend to it to have it taken to a half door?

Its coming along nicely. The rear fuselage is done after they replaced the air stair door. Wing center section and outer wing panels are going together. There was a LOT of corrosion in the airplane and they had to dig into a lot more than they originally thought. John's crew is doing the usual incredible job on everything. Don

Wow, this one really made its way around. Wish we could send them our Goodyear example. Maybe then we could actually see someone attempt to bring it back to life!

Doug, I'd really like to get copies of those pictures if I could. They will make a nice display at the museum.

The lack of full tailwheel doors were cause for some of the corrosion that was found in the airplane. The vertical and horizontal stabs were in pretty nasty shape. The right side panel in the cockpit had a lot of automotive wiring in it. In the early 80s it was caught in a hail storm in Canada that tore up the fabric on the wings. It was replaced with sheetmetal. Unfortunately, when the rivets were shot in, several of the ribs were split. Once the interior of the back seat was taken out, the shoddy work done by Kal-aero when the door was added became apparant. Some of the rivet tails looked like they were just bent over flat with a hammer. The poor girl was still flying when we sent her to Idaho but I'm afraid she was in far worse shaped than we thought. Another year or so should have her back out in Washington as the nicest Corsair restoration yet. She and I may arrive around the same time!

Here's an update I posted in December of 2007. Maybe I'll make it back out to Idaho before too long and get something current.

Brad, PM me and we can get what you want as far as photos. I did see those pics from 2007 and was hoping for a current update. Great when you can get it.
I had always wanted to tear that plane down a bit (wiring and such) but not to the extent that John and his crew are doing. That was a bit out of our league at the time.
