Don't know about the Avenger, but the site says that SeaFire PR503 has sold. Anyone know where it is headed???

I checked on the Tulsa Doctor Baldwin that was reported to be the new buyer. He chose to pass on the aircraft after looking into insurance costs for the plane. Nice bird though, I hope she goes to a good home!

Gee, maybe it's better to find out this kind of stuff first before you go making deals like this that affect people's lives. Me thinks!!

Does anyone have an idea on how much the insurance for a plane like this would cost per year?

Too bad a bunch of Warbird owners don't band together and start a "Warbird Insurance Company" - you could set a very high standard for plane condition, pilot(s), operating venue and so forth but then the premiums could be lower as it is a community of pilots and owners who are running the show.

A friends P-51 has full hull with a $100,000 deductable and it was $12,000/year. This was 2 years ago and he did CrazyHorse.

A Mustang is more like $30K a year for hull. A T-6 is about $4K-5K. I would imagine a TBM would be around $6K-$8K.

OUCH

Its a wonder more warbirds aren't on the ground in a insurance state of shock. There is a B-25 in Carson City NV - "tootsie" or maybe I'm remembering wrong - anyway the owner is a really nice guy but he has basically had to ground it due to insurance costs - it is a crying shame.

The full coverage quote on the EA-1E Skyraider at 500K with a 50k deductible is 17,250 per year. The TBM at asking price is more in the 12-14k range depending on who is flying it.

Just fly with minimum coverage, maybe have you plane appraised at half it's value. Or better yet, get liability only.

I'm intrigued. Why would you want to only get half your money? You know that if they total the plane the insurance company keeps it and sells the remains at auction, right?

Hi Bdk:

My thought on this is you get half your money if the plane is totaled, so you won't have to pay $37,000 a year.

On the other hand... you do a little bit of damage to your plane and as opposed to paying to fix it, the insurance company totals your plane and gets a lightly dinged up warbird for 1/2 price. From what I understand, a lot of insurance companies won't let you do this anymore in the first place.
From what I understand of the situation, Mr. Downing was the most accurate on the TBM quote that threw the deal off.
I remember one year we decided to go without insurance on the T-28 after we got an 8K quote. We almost had a tornado trash our plane (it lifted the t-28 next to it and rotated it 180 degrees!) and an engine failure that year. Needless to say, we got full coverage the next year, and with a little shopping, I found it for 1/2 as much.

What? I've never owned an airworthy ship before,. You mean it doesn't work like auto insurance? You can't just give those gremlins an estimate to repair the damage and they do it? They have the option to take your bird back? That's criminal.
