Morane Saulnier 406

Sat May 21, 2005 10:06 am

No prizes for guessing what was absolutely my favourite aircraft of the weekend at La Ferte Alais.

The stunning EFW D-3801 (Swiss development of the MS.406) HB-RCF, rebuilt by Max Vogelsang, now with new owners and repainted in French AF markings.

Just to hear the crackle of that Hispano Suiza as it taxied out across the grass at a French airfield. Worth the trip for that alone........ :) :) :)

Hi Mike,

Great pics.. :D Thanks for posting them.

Yes, a very beautiful (and rare) machine. My uncle was was indirectly involved in some of the work on the original restoration, mainly having to do with the engine.

I'm very curious, how does the Hispano Suiza sound compared to a Merlin, Allison or Griffon (or a Daimler Benz)?

Also, do you know if the new owners are still Swiss or ?

Cheers,
Hiergehts

Yes..great shots Mike of a very rare bird! Thank-you! I would like to see
the 406 in formation with a Caudron C.714 someday. 'Twould be a sight!

Ditto for the Hispano Suiza sound-track..do you know if anyone captured
those sounds on audio/video while there? Sure would like to hear and see
her in motion!!

Hey Airnutz,

There is a downloadable movie on the Flypast Forum of the MS-406 take-off , flight and landing.
Well worth seeing (and hearing !!)

If you need any help, just let me know.

with a few $million in the bank, who are turned on by warbirds and poor
Texas fatboys?

D-3801 movie clip

Tue May 24, 2005 1:58 pm

Thanks Turbo_NZ, the linked file worked perfectly. :D

The 12Y-51 sounds different than I'd expected. On a few passes it sounded like a 6 cyl Cont/Lycoming (obviously more from prop noise) & in another pass more like an R-2800! while in most of the rest similar to the Allision V-1710 (which is also 2 v/cyl). Alot less crackling and popping on roll-out than a Merlin as well..

All in all fascinating to finally hear what one sounds like..

Thanks.

Cheers,
Hiergehts

The bean counters said: "We don't need no stinkin 4 valves per cylinder, we can do things just as well with 2"

The current owner is Swiss.

According to swiss Mustang, his name cannot be remmebered.

If you send Martin a PM, he might reply
