dave,
what are the plans for the old engines? maybe a few of the wings might take them for display, or something.

Inop, no workie. Saves weight, not needed anymore since we don't fly above 10,000 feet, safer flying without two spinning wheels on each engine, less maintenance.... Those are the main reasons.

Has Fifi ever been pressurized in flight in the last 35 years?

I have a stupid question...
Were the B-29s ever so nice looking even when fresh out of production ? Seems to me most of what you are touching ends up looking brand new !
Very impressive work. This ol'lady will be something to see when she is completed. Wow !
Keep them coming, I love those photos.

I don't understand why it's such a big secret.
Mon Aug 31, 2009 8:57 pm
It's not a big secret, it's just that I don't need or want a crowd hangin around when we fire this up for the first time in 3 and a 1/2 years. You wouldn't either I suspect. Everyone will see it in good time. I'll post some pics tommorrow of the cowling and prop install.

Sorry I spoke. Knew it was a mistake, but did it anyway. Won't happen again.
Good luck though.

We've made some good progress with "FIFI" over the last few weeks. The following pics are from Sunday when we hung the newly overhauled prop on #3. Prior to that we struggled with the cowling and exhaust and had it off and on about 4 times trying to make it fit. Still have some minor issues but we'll work them out later.
I had quite a bit of help as you can see.
Here's the Sweeney tool installed for torquing the prop nut.
It's 1900-2000 ft/lbs but the Sweeney makes it 190-200 ftlbs.
Next goes the distributor.
Safties in place, Rick places the dome on.
A few taps to line up the screw hole for the safety of the dome nut.
Crew chief removes protective cover. WOW!
John wipes off finger prints.
Stay tuned, much more to come!!
