Is Mike Collier still the primary sponsor on the P-63?

Hey Cuz!

Yes, Mike is still the primary on the King Cobra. He is excited that it is coming back to San Marcos, especially after seeing the quality of all the work that has been done on the Rose.

As I write this the CenTex Wing Maintenance Team (or a couple of them at least) have flown the U-3 to Ezell's to look at the P-63 and make plans to bring her back to San Marcos.

Ray Clausen could be posting photos on this thread, as well as one started in the Maintenance Hangar, as early as tonight!

The plan is to keep everyone as up to date on the P-63F repairs as we did on the Yellow Rose. Probably even better updates, now that Ray is a WIX poster, and he has the ability that I don't have, to post photos!

Jack, did Chris get it about right? If so I'll push to get the paint changed, if I can. The markings do need a little work, given that the paint shop got the national insignia off. Unfortunately, even if we "get the red out" of the paint scheme, we'll still have the CAF wings on the doors. The good thing is Photoshop can take them out, or a rear quartering shot with the doors open hides them!

I'll be posting this link on the Maintenance Hangar thread as well. Here's the link to the Photobucket album Ray Clausen posted. They are from the inspection trip to Nelson Ezell's where they were looking to see what the P-63F needed in the way of work, and to get her moved to San Marcos.

I suppose anyone can "DO" one! The degree of success would be the question. Painting a profile by hand, one better have some artistic skills! Illustrating on the computer, artistic skills are helpful in getting a good look. A program like Photoshop with multiple layers is important. Working with BIG files so they reduce down. Important. Finding good drawings to start from......hmmmmm....good luck with that! Get multiple drawings, compare to photos, take your best guess. Study photos, study artwork, play with it! Pay attention to how sun, shade and shadow interact on the compound curves of an aircraft. Experiment, have fun!

I sometimes wonder if Graphic artists "borrow" already made profiles and simply modify certain properties and paint schemes? If someone has taken the time to create a beautifully shaped profile, why wouldn't you just accentuate it? Besides the obvious copyright infringement thing.

Which is why artist typically do NOT post large files of their art on the WEB, they get ripped off and not paid a cent. A small file will not reproduce well, turns all soft and squishy!!! My profiles I usually work at about 10,000 pix wide, and on the net show them at 800.........so there is just a little loss in detail!

Great artwork guys! I wasn't in on the paint decisions when we got her flying again, but since we have to have the tramp stamp on her now, I suppose it's a moot point. Maybe someday we can get there...

In the meantime, Gary Gates and I made a trip up to Ezell's yesterday and retrieved the P-63 fuselage. It is a long drive and we were beat and needed a couple of items that we didn't have handy at the hangar to safely unload her, so we've locked her up in a safe place for now. We could move it today, but no later than Tuesday afternoon she will be sitting in the Cobra Den in San Marcos, waiting for the rest of the parts to arrive. Nelson is heading to Reno, so we won't be going back for the other parts until later this month after he returns.

We are really excited to have this bird come back home. We've seen a couple if things that need to be addressed, but what we've seen is nothing compared to the work we are wrapping up on the Yellow Rose.

I'll get some photos posted of the retrieval trip and the P-63 in the Cobra Den no later than Wednesday evening.

Ray, thanks for joining up on the board..... question for you...... the last time that I talked (at length) with Scott Rozelle, Scott had the pylons for installing the the drop tanks...... and they Scott and Mike (at that time) were looking for a set of 75gal drop tanks which (installed) would almost double the range of the 'Cobra. Also would there be any long term plans to get the front end armament installed (looks kinda empty) in place of that rather large chunk of metal bolted to the airframe. Thanks..... Alan
