A Second P-51D at Yanks?

Mon May 30, 2005 2:07 pm

I was checking out my picture of the Hawker Hunker wreck at Yanks...

...when I noticed something interesting. There is what appears to be the frame of a P-51D bubble canopy on the ground to the left of the Hunter.

Could this be something left over from the restoration of "Miss Judy"?...

...or... Is there a P-51D project in storage at Yanks? Does anyone know? (I assume BDK will chime in here at some point.)

I wish I had been paying more attention to the cool "junk" at Yanks when I was there. I need to learn to leave more time!

Agreed. Maybe F9F?

I think that Yanks bought the P-51D already in airworthy condition (not restored there).

Its not a P-51 canopy. Its F-86, maybe why you got it confused with a MUSTANG.

Gents,

Please educate me please. I thought the shape was right for a P-51, but I am not an expert.

Fellas,
P-47D maybe? :? But if not, I'm with Mike on this one... P-51.

A P-51 canopy is more flat across the top on the front bow not a constant arch like the one in the picture. P-51's also dont have a deck in the back as the one in the picture does. They had a support behind the cockpit but not that much webbing. I was wrong as well its not F-86 either.

Definitely *not* a Mustang canopy. The front bow on a Mustang canopy frame is flattened on top (giving a 3-side appearance), and not round like the one in the photo.

The Mustang canopy also does not have the aft portion, behind where the pilot seat would fit, covered over. The canopy frame in the photo does have this area covered over.
