Stepping Back in Time... North Stars in Korea

Tue May 31, 2005 8:24 am

I present to you another flash back to the past, this time North Stars operating in the Korean Airlift. The pics were taken by A.J.S. (Tim) Timmins. He was a navigator on the North Stars during the Korean airlift in the 1950s.

Tim and his friends took a few pics along the way. You can find them in one of my Webshots albums at...

Most of the pictures are North Star related, but there is also a great shot of a F-80. Enjoy!

Mike

P.S. Tim is not the Vice President of the North Star Association of Canada. This organization, which I am involved, is restoring the last complete surviving North Star for the Canada Aviation Museum.

Looks like an olive drab F-86 in the barkround in one picture, WTF

Fascinating photos Mike. Yes, that is an olive drab F-86 in the background of one of the shots... very odd. Anyone operate F-86's in Korea other than the USAF? There's also the nose of a -5 corsair in the photo featuring the F-80. Cool stuff Mike, and thanks for getting permission to post them.

Cheers,
Richard

O.D. maybe... looks like it could even be flat black, somewhat faded. Maybe a field mod for night missions?

A few F86As were camoflaged locally to see if it would help. All it did was reduce speed a bit. It wasn't done on a large scale. Can't recall where I saw photos of some of them, but do recall reading that.

Tim did have one shot of an F-51, but unfortunately it was out of focus! It was the only one in his slides that was! Rats...
