Any body know what became of the dozens of A-7E, F-4s and other aircraft at NAS Memphis used as training aircraft for ground crews? I remember seeing a could F-4s sitting on the ground, wings up, in the fire training area.

they also had a H-53, F-14 and some other a/c in a hanger on the Training side of the base. Then there was the F11F, AV-8 (C?) and the RA-5C on sticks.

I remember a T-33 that sat in Bethel VT. Dad would stop by and let us play on it while he looked it over. Eventually we went by there again to check on it and it was gone. With a quick trip to the town office. We found out that the town no longer wanted it and burried it in a big hole with a bulldozer.

Hey Tim,
Regarding NAS Memphis, I went to the ADJ school in late 1981 thru 1982, and was assigned to VMA-124 as a plane captain on A-4E's and TA-4J's. I also got back there a couple of years ago and landed on the now decommissioned north side of the Base. The south side of the base is still in service.
Back as late as 1987 they had a lot of A-4b's, A-6A's A-7's and early F-4's (B's ?) , and at least one EA-6A. I remember lots of engines; J-79's, etc. in a lot of the Huey engines, etc. and a least a couple of F-8 Crusader's in the paint and sheet metal schools. On static display back then, they had an RA-5C in front of the chow hall, an P2v-3 by the golf course, and an F-11F long nose near the entrance. On the fire pit they were using F-4's. In the junk storage area, they had the fuselage to an EA-1E, a few FJ-4 Fury's, and some other junk. There were two heavily lacquered Skyraider props in front of HMMS-33 headquarters. There was an A-4C midfield north of the runways. There were some R-1820 radials and one R-1300 left over for some reason in the training schools. There were also plenty of inert 250 lb. Snakeyes at the front of each Marine Barracks, TDY.
Where is all now?
As of three years ago:
THE RA-5C is still there in place
The P2v-3 is on the ramp at Pensacola
The EA-1E fuselage, and Fj Furys were sold and scrapped at the scrapyard in Memphis next to MEM INTL. THis was confirmed by a mechanic friend at the time.
The A-4C, and the A-7's F-8's F-4's etc. were all dismantled and trucked to Davis Monthan. There were a couple of Skyraiders that went to the EAA around 1979, at the museum and they came from NAS Memphis. Don't know what happened to the Skyraider props. They were a cool way to dress up the entrance to HMMS-33!

Greetings Colonel,
How much was left of the B-25 and O-47? What model was the B-25, and were there any serials visible?
Thanks,
Chris

It's a B-25D

Don't remember the serial number, but it was a 'D' model.

Copy that, Colonel

I'll tell Mike when I see him tomorrow.

Things are progressing, but never as
quickly as anyone would like it to be.
Visitors are ALWAYS welcome, so please
do come on out.

I have the "Official" Rat web page going, but
nothing really worth seeing just yet.
Hopefully in a few weeks, I'll have up-to-date
pictures.

Chuck has some recent photos up at

Anyone know more about the B-25D they have listed as a project?
Unless it is the Aero Trader Example, I don't think it is covered in WD4...

The RA-5C on the pylon at the former NAS Memphis was still there as of November 2004. I think I have a photo of it taken at that time. I'll look and see.

The installation is now called Naval Support Activity Millington, and there is no longer any Navy flight activity there. In November 2004 there was a derelict FEDEX 727 sitting off the ramp, and the Memphis Belle Museum hangar where she's being restored, and a few GA activities, but that's about it. I believe the airfield is being operated by the city of Millington.
